Need help with dodgy plaster

We're trying to decorate our dining room, and have stripped off the wallpaper so we can paint the walls.
The problem is, some sections are a real mess. Lumpy old plaster with several layers of wallpaper in places, bits falling off, etc. We've done the best repair job we can with Polyfilla, but it doesn't look great.
The worst problem is that where the previous owners have put sliding patio doors in. Around the doors has been skimmed, over the existing wallpaper. Then the whole thing papered over again. So when I stripped the paper, I've been left with ragged edges of paper kind of sandwiched between two layers of plaster. Even after sanding the walls, it's noticeable.
I don't want to have to pay for a plasterer to skim the walls, we're overbudget already with our new kitchen.
I don't want to use textured wallpaper or Artex because the dining room leads into the kitchen and utility via an archway so I'd have to use the same finish in there too instead of the nice smooth walls that are already there.
Any ideas?? I'm about ready to pull my hair out with it, weeks of work and it looks awful.

Try a small amount first, as I used that a couple of years ago, and it's not magic!
You can buy small bags of patching palster (I think that's what it's called) that can deal with larger areas than a normal filler. It may be easiest to remove the paper / plaster sandwich and redo the area if it's not massive.0
