Out of curiosity i tried SVO in a 54 shogun at the weekend. 99p litre at Netto! Filled half the tank and popped in a tenner of diesel. Ran like a dream, no stalling no problem in starting. Unless someone tells me otherwise Im off to costco.

Direct injection engine (and still a fairly new car), ring gumming problems because your squirting thick oil directly into the cylinder bore, doesnt matter that you have some diesel in there it wont be enough to solve the problem. If the vehicle has any kind of warranty and the injectors or pump fails, plus premature bore wear due to polymerisation dont expect them to foot the bill. Was it really worth the potential risk when there is only 20-25p a litre difference and the decrease in mpg which you get when running on oil due to a lower calorific value and cetane rating?

I've been on 60% SVO since start of the summer and around 30% before that. Disco is running fine though I've watched the SVO prices climb since I started doing it. No Costco near here so I've blagged a Bookers card when I needed a top up 89p/l for 20l box.
And theres the grin factor when you get out and a passerby says 'it smells like someones having a BBQ somewhere'.

Again, if you want to wear your engine quicker then it doesnt bother me that you havent fully looked into the problems you will encounter on running your direct injection engine on an oil mix..

  • Hi all,
Can anyone help me I have a year Y reg Transit 2.5 Tdi and I want to know if I can run it on a mixture of new unused vegitable oil. At the moment I am running my old 1994 Discovery on a 50% mixture of Diesel and Veg oil I put about 40 litres of Diesel in then top it up with 20 litres of veg oil and it runs fine apart from the chip shop smell but I can put up with that.
Does anyone know if there is a data sheet or official site where I can get the info I cant afford to have the van go wrong as it is used for my small business.
Hope to here from someone soon.
    Thanksrolleyes.gif

Just a recap on this old thread.
Since I was last involved in it I have continued to use various mixes, less when colder etc..
Never had a problem, same beast still running, never changed the fuel filter.
Some may say lucky, some may think like I, that the diesel companies have a few spies logging in here to scare people off.

    Be sensible and good luck.

Where are you finding the cheapest place to buy vegetable oil at the moment?

Yes a specialist site and forum is best. I understand lucas pumps have a greater number of problems.

26% of vehicles having lucas pumps are in trouble
42% of vehicles in trouble have lucas pumps

From an environmental viewpoint sourcing is essential or else you could be generating more carbon than diesel and destroying rainforest into the bargain.

Just found this whilst browsing. Know its an old thread but what the hell. Now got a Corsa 1.7 and a Megan 1.9 dti running a summer mix of 75% oil to 25% diesel with no real problems.(revs vary a bit on startup but sort themselves out when warm, both bosch pumps). Was 50/50 in the Corsa during the cold weather.
We get waste oil from smaller local isolated pubs and takeaways and cold filter it to 1 micron through a 100 micron barrel filter then 25/5/1 sock filters.

Im using around a 90% Veg oil and diesel mix, in My VW T4 Transporter. In winter I go down to around 50/50 with few problems.
I get my oil from Bookers and pay around 98p a Litre
