British Gas - £7605 quote for resiting and replacing boiler. Madness?

  • I used to work for British Gas (within the last six months)in the business department and I would strongly advise not to go with them for any type of work, you'll have nothing but problems...!!!

You have been way over priced and I would be very careful as BG sometimes do use discontinued stock.

If you did go with them and in the event of something happening I can G'tee that you'll be on the phone for hours trying to get through to them.....If I ever needed to contact them it was a nightmare and I had quick dial numbers..!!!

As people have said get some various quotes from CORGI registered heating engineers...word of mouth is always the best thing to do. I would STRONGLY recommend that someone competes the work who is registered. A lot of insurance policies will get you on this if you have some work done and something happens like a flood....... I would also check about the new rules about selling the house (if this was ever likely to happen) as you need to produce all sorts of documents and certificates now

and to settle the discussion reference the National Grid....... they are a shipper, they ship the gas from the North Sea or where ever distribute it to the pipes and then sell square footage to people like BG and NPower (compaines are called suppliers) so you could really argue the toss that they DO supply gas, but to companies who then sell it on to their customers

Interesting david29dpo....especially when considering that National Grid do not actually "sell" gas.....plus I doubt that they are resiting and replacing a boiler for £475?

I know. yes it was to lay the pipes. Just quoting the rip off prices of BG, who also replace boilers.
  • That Price Sounds A Bit High For Just A Boiler Swap. You Say Your Boiler Is 30 Years Old, So Its Probably Not A Combi Unlike The New One. You'll Probably Need A New Gas Supply From The Meter, Possibly Electrical Equipotential/cross Bonding, Any New Radiators Or Thermostatic Valves Included? Is Any Bg Homecare Included- They Sometimes Add 5 Years Homecare Onto Your Quote So You Pay Upfront And Get A Discount.

Had an old boiler taken out of the kitchen and a new Keston combi boiler put in the loft.

Including taking the water tanks out of the loft, removing copper cylinder from the bathroom, laying new pipework etc...

the whole lot came to just under £2,000.

Installed by a local Corgi Registered boiler, heating and plumbing bloke
Mortgage and totally Debt Free as of December 2008.

    boy does it feel good!
Thanks MSE for all the tips and advice
