London Stop-Over

Hello People,

I was hoping somebody could help with a couple of questions.

We are honeymooning in New York. Flying from Edinburgh to New York via British Airways (Premium Economy). The flight isn't direct and stops in Heathrow.

My questions are:

We have about an hour in Heathrow to get the connecting flight. I know it will be the same terminal, but is an hour enough time to make a connecting flight?

And, what happens if we miss the connecting flight? Do they just put you on the next flight?

All the flights I look at have at the most an hour and 5 mins in Heathrow to make the connecting flight. BA have assured me this SHOULD be enough time, but what if the flight from Edinburgh is delayed?

Any help will be most appreciated.

Personally, I would start agitating with BA to book you onto an earlier flight.
1 hour is the Minimum Connection Time allowed at Heathrow, if you are going through the same terminal (If you were changing terminals, the MCT is considerably longer).

if the flight from EDI is delayed, BA will get you onto the next flight with AVAILABLE spaces. With lots of OneWorld flights going from LHR to NYC each day, you SHOULD be ok.

Alternatively, taking an earlier flight (if its available), will take away all the stress.

p.s. if you miss your original flight from LHR due to the connection being delayed and you're over 3 hours late at your destination due to taking an alternative flight, you then come into the realms of EU261 for flight delay compo.

Was it an AA aircraft from T3? If so always check the operating air carrier.

Most likely you'll be ok. There's no security etc to go through at LHR outbound and BA flights to NYC leave from T5.

The key will be T5 A,B or C.

Look at the boards as soon as you get through the door into the terminal and head straight to your gate. Most likely you'll be heading to lifts in the centre of the terminal that link you to monorail that get you to the terminal.

Don't mess about getting a coffee or buying an overpriced handbag.

If your flight down is on schedule it will be enough time. You basically walk straight of the plane and into the departure terminal. Coming back, an hour is a bit more iffy as you need to clear immigration and security. That said, there are plenty of flights from LHR to EDI so should you miss one you usually don't have to wait too long for the next one.

    Most likely you'll be ok.

I'm trying to imagine the following conversation with Mrs Cat

"is everything sorted with our honeymoon flights dear ? You haven't any dodgy connections that are going to completely bollox the smooth running of our honeymoon and cause me to nag you to death for the first few days of married life ?" asks Mrs Cat.

"Yes" says I, "most likely we'll be OK"

then step back and wait for the tirade of "what the **** does "we'll most likely be OK" mean. Its our honeymoon for goodness sake, I thought that you had things properly arranged" etc, etc

OP, try for an earlier BA flight from EDI to LHR, the general PITAness simply isn't worth it.

Yes, the former Mrs PW enjoyed those sorts of conversations.

Trips always went smoothly until the silly mare put shampoo in her hand luggage and it was spotted on the security check at LHR returning from Milan.
