Having gas meter moved

Hi,
Currently I have quite an old gas meter (eventually id like to get a smart meter installed). It's located in a storage cupboard and is situated on an outside wall.
I'd like to turn the storage cupboard into a downstairs toilet and currently the gas meter sticks quite far out and as you go in you'd probably clip you shoulder on the frame that's surrounding it. What I propose, is to spin the gas meter 180 degrees and to access it from the front of the house. Is there any reason anyone can see that this is not a possibility?
Also, (please excuse my ignorance) but I'd need someone 'gas certified - Corgi?' to carry out the work. Would it be better to contact my current gas provider to carry out the work or get someone independent?
Thanks!

By front of the house, do you mean outside?
If the meter is moved outside you would normally expect the ECV to be moved.

Oh sorry, yes I do mean outside. Ok, I've just had to Google what ECV means, I assume this has to remain inside the house? Currently it's to the left of the meter so I'm sure it would be easily movable.
I'd heard of corgi, but good to know it's been replaced by gas Safe.

No the ECV stays by the meter, so if you move the meter outside you can fit a 2nd ECV which is labelled to indicate the presence of the 2nd one. The more expensive option is to get all the pipework moved but the gas transporter would need to do that.

I don't think you can just get someone in, even if Gas safe registered; the job (very expensive according to others) needs to be done by the meter owners.

Npower will be able to relocate the meter to a certain extent, but not passing through any walls.

To have your meter moved outside, you will need to contact your gas transporter (National Grid/Northern Gas networks) to gain a quote on having it moved.

I was quoted over £700 a few years ago to move my meter. It was in a cloakroom I was also coverting into a toilet it was only being moved into the garage which was the other side of the wall it was already on, about 2 feet of pipe was needed. i decided not to bother and had it boxed in with a removable front cover for meter readings. I had a small wash hand basin put in above it, but mine was at floor level so it was not too much of a problem.

Ouch! £700! I don't know if I was to have a new meter installed whether the meter would be slimmer in depth which could afford me a little bit of extra space... I'll have a think!

We had a smart meter fitted since the work was done and we thought the same, that we may be able to make the boxing in smaller but it took the same amount of space up. It was conneted to the exixting gas pipes that were coming up through the floor so had to be in the same place as before. Perhaps if your pipework is different it may be possible.
