I think it probably is more accurate to say 'No house in that road has USED a number for the last forty years'. My understanding (which I admit could be wrong) is that they will have a number, it just isn't used but if the number were used then post would still be delivered.
    .

LOL - well, if any house in our road has a number I'd be very interested to know! Surely if all houses had numbers they'd be listed on the electoral roll - and there are none listed for our road.

    OK, so if I put:
    10 Bell Lane
    Bedmond
    ABBOTS LANGLEY
    WD5 0QS
...on an envelope, which house would it get delivered to?

The fifth house on the right, as even numbers are on the right?
The fifth house on the left, as even numbers are on the left?
The tenth house, left or right?
The tenth house on the RM Postcode Finder list - seems unlikely as that list is in alphabetical order, but the houses in the road definitely are not?
    Something else?

As no-one appears to know the mythical number of their house/farm/bungalow, perhaps we can safely assume any number on a hitherto unknown unpublished list serves no useful purpose.

If you really need to know I would suggest you ask the postman, he should know what number applies to each house (although it may have got lost in the mists of time - or lack of use).

You can assume whatever you want, but if a number has been assigned then it will be equally useful to the name, or possibly more useful - who knows?

I have stayed in many houses that don't have a number, they have a name only, they are detached houses in the country so not even a street name.

There are many houses around where I live that don't have numbers.

Not sure I agree with Arandommiser regarding all houses having numbers

My understanding (which could be wrong) is that behind the scenes the house will have a number but the occupants have opted not to use it. Many years ago there was an exercise to ensure all houses had a number (I can't say if that got completed to 100% or not) - but you could technically call your house anything you wanted and use that as a mailing address.

There are no house numbers in the village my parents live in and never have been. The original village had a handful of cottages that were named and as additional houses have been built they have also been named and the village has grown to a couple of hundred homes over around a hundred years or so.
If numbers were ever 'assigned' the residents have never been advised of it and as one or two additional homes are built every year, on average, it'd be total chaos as many of these are built ion land in between much older homes.

Where I live (remote / rural) there are about 50 places with the same postcode as this place, no street name, no street, no street lights and certainly no house numbers! The local posties are brilliant at knowing just who lives where.

There's never been any numbers on any of the scattered houses and, as there's no street I can't see how the assertion that 'all houses have numbers' can be true.

Not everyone lives in a suburban, built up or city environment.

What happens with this alleged numbering system if a house, in a street where all are "named", is demolished and 2, 3 or 4 are built on the plot? How would anyone be able to work out which number they are?

My parent's house has a unique name incorporating the (equally) unique name of the road it's on. A friend once sent a postcard from Germany simply addressed to "name of house. UK" and it arrived with no discernible delay.

There isn't any behind the scenes here. I have no number, no street name and no village. Just the house name, the nearest town (12 miles away) and my post code.
