Faulty car within 6 months
Options
Hi there,
I bought a second hand car from a dealership in January. The car has recently given off black/white smoke and failed to start at times. I had the vehicle diagnosed by the manufacturer and it came back stating the EGR valve needed replacing.
Having read the law, I see that within 6 months I am entitled to a repair or replacement as long as the dealer can't prove the fault didnt exist when the car was sold. I have spoken to the dealer who went down the route of telling me to contact a solicitor.
I know that I need to write a letter, but I am not sure how to write it. I have looked for a template online, but they all seem to be for rejecting a car.
Any advice would be gratefully appreciated.

Why not just use the template you have found??0

Age of car and Mileage ? Whats the cost of repair ?
Sounds a lot of hassle for minimal return. I highly doubt they will take the car back.0 -
What is the cost of the required repair? Are you otherwise happy with the car?0

Template I found is for rejecting the car. I want the car repairing, cost from manufacturer is just under 1500.
Vehicle is 2009 with a mileage of 870000 -
So replace "reject" with "repair' in the template you have.0

I think it's safe to say that an 8 year old car with 90,000 miles on the clock needing a £1500 repair would be deemed not to have been present when the car was sold in terms of the fault unless you can demonstrate you complained of the issue within a week or so.
Who would want to be a S/H Car Dealer !!!0 -

I have only done 2000miles in the vehicle in 4 months, I think its unlikely that the valve would go from working perfectly to not working correctly in that space of time.0 -
Second hand cars need ongoing maintenance. Clearly the fault was not there when you bought the car as it would have been obvious.
What car is it, £1500 sounds steep.
