Use the same capacity as originals if possible. I read somewhere that larger ones may never get fully charged due to the trickle charge off the base and so last a shorter time. Also some cordless phones will apparently only work with a particular type of battery. (Can't remember the type offhand and no idea why)
There are specialist battery companies online who will sell you the right batteries.
I was looking at replacing the batteries in out handsets recently, and then decided to replace the phones.
  • If I'm buy AA rechargeables, I normally buy 2000mAh Eneloops (Sanyo)

They are very good at holding their charge

Eneloops are good, reliable batteries but not the cheapest.

You'll need to refer to Sam Vimes Theory of Economic Injustice on this.
The reason that the rich were so rich, Vimes reasoned, was because they managed to spend less money.

Take boots, for example. He earned thirty-eight dollars a month plus allowances. A really good pair of leather boots cost fifty dollars. But an affordable pair of boots, which were sort of OK for a season or two and then leaked like hell when the cardboard gave out, cost about ten dollars. Those were the kind of boots Vimes always bought, and wore until the soles were so thin that he could tell where he was in Ankh-Morpork on a foggy night by the feel of the cobbles.

But the thing was that good boots lasted for years and years. A man who could afford fifty dollars had a pair of boots that'd still be keeping his feet dry in ten years' time, while the poor man who could only afford cheap boots would have spent a hundred dollars on boots in the same time and would still have wet feet.

This was the Captain Samuel Vimes 'Boots' theory of socioeconomic unfairness.

I've bought cheap batteries before, and they've died and my charger has refused to recharge them. I've yet to have an Eneloop die on me.

BUT.. this is for a phone handset, which is commonly a low-power-use item, and I bet it only needs something like 1300mAh AA rechargeables. I wouldn't bother spending much on them.

I haven't got a clue what all that cut and pasted BS was but all I said was they are not the cheapest, I happen to use them myself but your average MSE goes for cheapness over quality.

  • Size for size yes, but the chargers are different. A NiCD charger wont charge NiMH properly unless its a dual intelligent or switchable one.

    Their phones maybe old?

Banned NiCD? My Ryobi batteries are NiCD and they are not that old, or my memory needs a recharge? How long have i had them?

Just my luck more obsolete stuff to replace :)

I hate the way Li-Ion batteries go speedy speedy then stop instantly..

Under the so-called "batteries directive" (2006/66/EC), the sale of consumer Ni–Cd batteries has now been banned within the European Union except for medical use; alarm systems; emergency lighting; and portable power tools. This last category has been banned effective 2016.[11] Under the same EU directive, used industrial Ni–Cd batteries must be collected by their producers in order to be recycled in dedicated facilities.
Cadmium, being a heavy metal, can cause substantial pollution when discarded in a landfill or incinerated.

It's a quote from a Terry Pratchett book - essentially, the poor spend the most because they buy poor quality, cheaper items that need replacing more frequently.

I'd hope that MSE'ers are aiming for 'value' rather than pure cheapness.

I spent about £70 on a pile of eneloops, fed up of my Maplins NiMh batteries always needing a charge and the higher capacity ones not fitting in all devices.

We have a "Gigaset E310" cordless and used the Energizer Recharge Power Plus batteries at first replacement, which was a couple of months ago, after 3 years of use.

My purchasing approach is the same as the one in the Terry Pratchett book, Ringo_24601:
I always buy the best I can afford. I have two pairs of dress shoes that I bought 4 years ago, one brown, one black leather. I use an independent shoe shop which has a fitting service and I had to wait for the brown pair to be made and sent from Germany. Total cost was £240+ for both pairs. They fit like a glove, are supremely comfortable and still look as good as when new. They will probably see me out! I buy Beeswax polish, not tinned or ordinary spray stuff, and clean them regularly. I buy all my clothes in the same way and I have shirts, sweaters and trousers, some of which are over 20 years old and still look good.

My wife will not pay more than a maximum of £10 for shoes, despite the years of proving to her that is an uneconomic way of buying them, and providing calculations to prove that. Our dd agrees with my POV, but then she needs another whole bedroom to store her shoe collection! Her partner buys a lot of shoes and clothes at charity shops: so does our ds.

Point being, we are all different.
I think this job really needs
    a much bigger hammer.
