  • ?????? When have I ever said that? I remember saying I personally only know one person that uses only webmail services. I use several gmail addresses myself (in addition to pop3 client for my other addressess). I suggest you read my posts properly before making false statements about me on other threads.
So when you use your gmail you use pop3 to download it ?

I find it strange that you recommend an On-line mail program when you don't know anyone who uses one ?

I don't understand your comment. Most e-mail can be accessed either on-line (web based) or by using an e-mail client. e.g. Gmail, Yahoo etc. etc. can be accessed using an e-mail client.

Well i just find it slightly hypocritical that when i suggested in another thread that most people use an on-line mail program such as Hotmail or Yahoo etc. you berate me stating that nearly all people use pop3 and then you come on here and suggest using On-line mail. that's all surely you can see the irony

For some reason he's interpreted my post from that other thread that I don't know anyone who uses a webmail service:

"Nearly all the people (techies and non-techie alike) I know use a pop3 client of some kind. In fact I can only think of one person I know who only uses webmail."

How on Earth can anyone get what he stated from my quote above?

You really didn't read my posts did you? You said that most people don't use a pop3 client and I disagreed from my own personal experience (which is just as valid as your personal experience and a couple of other posters seem to have the same experience as me), I never said anything about nobody using webmail. Why do you think people only use one or the other? I'd say there are many that use both but that still means they are actively using a pop3 client which was my whole point. But I suppose you're not going to agree that your statement above about me stating I don't know anyone who uses webmail was wrong.

fair do's my bad :o i still disagree about the pop3's though ;) and feel that most people use on-line mail only i even have office 2003 installed at home ut just don't see the point of downloading mail when it's so easily manageable on-line

Ok, fatal miscommunication then :j. I should have maybe put it in bold myself and/or added for emphasis that any of the people I know (myself included) use webmail accounts such as gmail in addition to a pop3 account. I honestly have absolutely no problem in having differing views. In fact I've only said it is what I thought based on my own experience and that's why I don't say it's definitely the case in general. I could easily be wrong. But without any figures I can only go on personal anecdotal evidence, as you do.

Well, I used to use webmail and I still do to an extent. Generally, I use the webmail to check for important mails from any location or send an urgent mail to somebody when I'm not at home e.g. in the office.

I do however download all my mail accounts via pop3. I work from home a lot without a company laptop so I mail databases & spreadsheets back and forth. In those cases it's much easier to manage via pop3 in my experience as service issues don't get in the way of important work. Also, it's not uncommon to be sending mails throughout a week that are too much for the webmail to handle so by downloading they don't effect the webmail limits.

    Thats just me though.

When I upgraded from Tiscali dial up I kept my original email address as long as I logged in. My pop3 does this for me via the broadband which has kept it live for years. I think I will keep a dial up service as you guys have recommended and get a domain going forward to stop it from rearing it's head in the future.

Thanks for all the help from you all.

I have kept all my email address whenever I have changed. I just change the account to the free dial up one, when transferring, I still have ones that do not exist now, but the work via the company who has taken them over, ie Worldonline is now Tiscali, but my old WOL account still works. I use outlook so just set them up with an account and they download with my latest providers mails. I must admit I tend to use my old address for when I have to put one on the web, and then download them to their own folder and keep my private one for good mails.

One tip, if not mentioned before, if you set them up to Outlook, the SMTP address has to be the same as the one you are connected via and not the original one, if you wish to send from them.
