approx cost for installing gas central heating?

hi
i'm thinking about buying a flat with ancient electric storage heaters.
Its a 2 bed ex-local auth flat.
I would like these removed. does anybody know whats involved removing these and getting gas in the flat? there is gas in the street and through the wall has gas central heating.
just trying to determine budget considerations.
thanks

Storage heaters aren't too difficult to get rid of, just disconnect the wiring and pull them apart; you'll be left with a lot of bricks and sheet metal, which might be a problem to dispose of if you live in a flat.

As for gas CH a lot depends on how much it will cost to get gas installed in the flat (meter . pipe etc) and how far it has to come from the main.

Once gas is installed CH will be about £3 grand.depending on the type of boiler.
  • Or if you use British Gas, £3k might cover the deposit.

Normally getting a gas supply in is expensive, speak to your local utility company and see if they can give you a estimate on put a gas main/meter to the flat your looking at.

Also have a look at the floor, see if it's concrete as this may make it difficult to install central heating.

  • its only a 4 in a block flat. the others have gas so the supply can't be that difficult.

Put an ad on my builder or the like. You'll get a range of quotes and a rough idea of the cost

Bear in mind that once gas CH is installed it will need servicing every year and repairs from time to time. A service contract will cost a couple of hundred pounds a year. In a small home this will significantly offset the relative cheapness of gas compared to to electricity as a fuel. Storage heaters may not be the most elegant way of heating but once installed need no servicing and are unlikely to need repairs. I've had mine for 30 years and only needed to replace a couple of knobs. I would probably have had to replace a gas boiler at least once during that time.
