Parcelforce pulped my books

Options
A consignment of books from the US (tracked and insured) when it arrived at Parcelforce Coventry International Hub was partially damaged. Parcelforce took it upon themselves to decide that 9 books were not worth saving, pulped or otherwise discarded them, repaired the parcel and put the remaining books back in the system for delivery. The repaired parcel did not look too originally damaged when it arrived but, of course, I was 9 books short. The American supplier agreed to post out the 9 books and claim on their insurance - which is fine. However, I am still sore that Parcelforce took it upon themselves to decide that books (that I had paid for) were not worth saving .... taking that decision away from me. It's not as if the damaged items were a danger to anyone had they put them all back in the mail. Surely, this is not legal?!

Do you know how they were damaged?

For example, could it be that they were perhaps already soaked by a corrosive liquid, or some such other damage that was a hazard to PF employees or others?
  • Impossible. The remaining books were posted to me absolutely clean and uncontaminated by water or anything else. The books were all in the same parcel when unpacked by them. Even if they fell out of the parcel into a pool of acid on the floor as they were repairing it.... they would still be responsible for damaging my goods.

I'm sure parcelforce didn't do it for the fun of it.
Can't you just accept what you've been told?

And no doubt they will be reimbursing their customer ( that's the bookseller by the way, not you!)

You have no idea what happened. Maybe a slow leak water damaged some of them? Maybe they were packaged in two packages within one box. Who knows. Not you.

You're getting your books. So why do you care what happened to the first set?
  • It's the principle. I do not see what right they have to destroy books I have paid for without either consulting me or explaining their actions.

Fell out of box, trapped in conveyor, caused conveyor to burn books. Courier decides not to annoy customer by delivering said goods and customer still complains.

    Courier can't win.

If the books are not perfect the recipient complains anyway - so they take away the debate and argument. You are not their customer the shipper is, they don't have to consult nor explain themselves to you.
  • I have asked. It's impossible to speak to the people who actually did it... Just a customer service agent who said that "almost certainly they will have been destroyed." That is not good enough.

What are you looking to achieve here?

    You are not their customer.

Chances are no one will be able to recall what happened to the books.

    Get over it. Move on.

    Why on earth not?

They don't owe you an apology! They owe booksellersrus an apology.

You have no contract with you. They don't have to consult you. They don't have to explain themselves to you.

You have NO CONTRACT with parcelforce. They owe you nothing.

The books are being replaced so theyre not priceless first editions you can't believe your luck that you managed to find. They're just replaceable that are being replaced. Booksellersrus will have their money back, they don't care. Why do you care?!
  • Are these books irreplaceable in the sense they are first editions or signed by the author or something?

I remember (my parents) buying Marvel and DC comics for me that had come over from the USA in the 60s that arrived as shipping ballast and were in less than pristine condition!

If your seller replaces them, what's the problem?
