Landed with huge BT bill

Options
Hi all,
I moved address last year and bt messed me about with the move including extra charges which were meant to be wiped for the hassle. It lead to the point where I cancelled them and went to virgin. My partner signed up to virgin in February and i called BT to cancel. When calling them I was informed that Virgin had already notified them and my account was clear. Then in the following months I received phone calls and letters demanding money and being told I was still under contract. I have contacted them multiple times to explain I had cancelled but they keep telling me there is no record of this plus I have to pay a 300 cancellation fee because it was an 18 month contract ( which I was unaware of) I had explained until I was blue in the face that I had cancelled only to be told that it was customer services I spoke to and they cannot cancel the contract. They have now sent me a bill for 575 which I cannot pay and don't see why I should. They insist there is no record of my cancellation in February. Don't know where to go from here!! But all in all my experience with BT has been awful :(

Your cancellation would require you to pay of the remaining months on your contract .

So you owe the balance of your contract that's £300 is it for 18 months balance .
If so whats the remainder for ??

Basically send them the money for the balance of £300 as their is no way around that .

There are two issues here. One is that the OP didn't check what the minimum term was (OP, a home move always starts you on a new min term contract, unless Sky is the provider). The cost will be whatever the contractual ETC is per month for your package x the remaining months on the contract. All this can be found on the website.
The second, and more complex issue is that BT have allegedly no record of a cancellation in February, and so are still billing you until you give your 14 days notice. It's worth pointing out that signing up with VM does NOT cancel your BT service, as they use entirely separate networks. With all other providers, the incoming one initiates the cancellation of the outgoing one.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
