KLM delayed flight

On Friday, my husband was traveling from Copenhagen to Norwich via Amsterdam. The flight from Amsterdam to Copenhagen was late arriving, so his flight was 40 minutes late taking off. Half way through this flight he was told he would not arrive in time at Amsterdam to get his connection to Norwich and his ticket had been cancelled. Once in Amsterdam airport he went to the KLM desk and was told he needed to get a hotel room and he had been booked on the next flight , which was the next day , so he would arrive in Norwich 12 hours later than planned. Today KLM had said they will pay just for the hotel , no compensation, does he have a claim , thank you
