Nod, smile, agree - and when her back's turned, bin them.

    You're a grown adult, !!!!!!.

My parents are currently downsizing after nearly 30 years and my mum in particular keeps so much stuff. She has found freecycle/freegle to be really helpful- it's let her feel good that things are going to a good home, so she's felt able to get rid of lace bedding that she hasn't looked at for decades, some belongings of her dad's that someone is going to restore etc. My mum just can't bear things going to waste- so as long as someone cares about them /wants them she's happy. Last I heard she was panicking about the contents of her freezer when she moves...
  • It's her stuff. If she doesn't want you to bin it, just take it round to her house in black bin bags and give it back to her. Leave it there; don't give her a choice. She can then do what she likes with it.

I just got off from talking to her and got her down from 4 boxes to one box with a thinnish quilt, the blowup bed and sleeping bag which I managed to cram into one.

Not bad; I am down 3 boxes worth of quilts.

I realised a few years ago that she has acted as my garantor for every place I have gotten and I wouldn't have been able to get them otherwise so I do keep that in mind such that it is her that facilitated me living at these places at all.

You're right it's not worth paying for a 2nd bedroom all year on the offchance somebody might stay for 2-3 nights in a year.

It's difficult with stuff - if/when your mum's no longer around that's guilt you'll carry with you .....

How many quilts does one person need? This isn't special, unique stuff with sentimental family value; it's just unnecessary stuff.

Use sucky bags to reduce the space they take. I keep spare duvets and bed linen in sucky bags.

You should be able to get your mum to donate the stuff you don't need if you do it in a way that she can make the decision. She needs to feel that it will be useful that is why she is keeping it. So if you can help her to feel that it would be useful to someone else and that they would want it and be pleased that she had kept it you should be able to get her to hand it on.
