Insurance and excess cover for car hire in Spain

Hello there,
We have hired a car with AVIS (through ebookers) from Malaga airport in Spain. The prices are of course, hefty for the excesses etc. I am just after some advice, as this is the first time I've hired a car abroad, as to the cheapest/best way to get insuraance and excess cover for the vehicle while I'm using the hire car? Also, anything else I might need to get, that I perhaps haven't thought of?#
