Ceiling Speaker to TV?

Options
Hi All

I have spent a fair time on the internet but cannot understand some of the terminology therefore hoping someone can help.

We are having a large open play kitchen diver extension currently being built, in the middle will be a wall mounted TV. The room is 10m X 4 m and we were thinking it will be good for a speaker (s) on either ends of the room so everyone can hear etc and although flexible do like the look of ceiling speakers.

I have seen loads of speaker online connected to a tv, and it seems only the speakers play the sound and not the tv. Sorry if this sounds silly, but I would like the TV AND the speakers to all play the sound as someone may sit in the middle of the room and some people may be near the kitchen units at the end. What type of speakers do I need?

Also we are not after anything fancy, but would like to future proof as much as possible. What type and power speakers should I go for? With it being a new extension I can pay the electrician extra and have these powered if necessary?

any help would be much appreciated.

We have ceiling speakers and can opt for the TV and or ceiling speakers to play the sound. To be honest we never have the TV sound on, it is always through the ceiling speakers. I would suggest you have a look at some of the multiroom websites and put enough speakers in each room to service what you need.

The sound from the TV will likely sound very poor in comparison to your ceiling speakers. You'd be better off buying something extra to go next to your TV. Could be a sound bar, separate speaker(s), or even some more ceiling speakers above the TV.

How many speakers are you thinking of getting? I imagine the easiest solution will be an AV receiver, 4 ceiling speakers a center speaker and a whole load of speaker cable.

I used to have ceiling speakers in my last flat .
I had everything going through a stereo amplifier .
Iirc , the TV was on the aux button .

Not sure of your setup, but have you also considered wall speakers?
Have a look on the richer sounds website.
There is a website also , called 'the speaker guys' . Might be worth checking out .

Forgot to mention a piece of potentially useless information :
My last huge tv made by toshiba ( my fave bu soon no more :() , had a free pair of stereo speakers. Came with thin, bell wire . Never used them, ended up giving them away . That TV had proper speaker sockets on back . If your tv hasn't got those then I wouldn't just connect any speakers straight from t v
  • Thanks for the responses.

In terms of the number of speakers, quite flexible but was thinking maybe 2 speakers on either side of the room. Then either the TV itself or something close to the TV to play the sound.

The multiroom system, as the name applies is this a way of getting the same sound in multiple rooms? if yes then as we are only trying to get sound in the same large room.

    Thanks
  • Just thought : if you're having speakers at each end of the room , wall speakers may not be the answer .

This looks like it may be the solution

Yes, it's not for a single room. We have our "boxes" in a purpose built small room with the system sending the audio and visual over cables to each room. A wall pad/remote works the system in whatever room you want, too complicated if you just want speakers in one room.

Pledge's idea seems the easiest solution for you, although without knowing the room size it's difficult to assess how many speakers you will need.
  • Thanks

The open plan room is 10m X 4 m. The multi room setup, although I don't think this is what we need but unless I am missing something I am struggling to see the main benefit. Is it solely that you can play music from 1 source (I.e dab player) and the have the audio outputted to many rooms?

I recently completed my kitchen refurb and the dimensions are similar. The TV is at one end of the room in a corner and I basically bought this

    http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/351622249224

Plenty of inputs on the amp for various TV and audio equipment, bluetooth, sd cards etc etc . Comes with 4 ceiling speakers. Like you, as it was a complete refurb I could hardwire the speakers. I bought an extra pair of speakers as well so have 2 at one end, 2 at the other, and 2 in the middle.

At under £100 It's a really cheap system but I've been impressed with ours as it does sound good. We use it mostly for listening to the radio through the TV's freeview radio channels but it will blast Masterchef equally well.

Will you ever want "proper" sound for your TV viewing pleasure

    eg. surround sound for movies

if you do then simply having a load of speakers won't work.

AV amps often support surround sound support and can mix down for multi speaker setup as well were you just want more of the same because the room is big.
