Just had a wonderful 3 centre holiday in Croatia, and want more of the area asap. Stayed just outside Split [4nights], Island of Brac [7 nights], Tucepi, south of Split [3 nights]. Fabulous hotels too.
We usually travel independently, but for the above we were part of a group, which had a lot of pros and the odd niggly con. Independent travel to that area looks straight forward enough, so off we go.
I purposely didn't spend all our Croatian Kuna, to give us the incentive to return asap.
So, just booked easyJet daytime return flights from LGW to and from Split on 28 September - 12 October. Total cost for 2 of us including 20Kg each was £203.
Plan is...
- Airport shuttle to Split Old Town.
- 2 nights in Split, near the Old Town and bus station.
- Bus to Mostar.
- 4 nights in Mostar, with day trips.
- Bus to Sarajevo.
- 5 nights in Sarajevo, with day trips.
- Backtrack to Split, overnights in Mostar and Split.
- Easyjet flight home.
Looks good.....got the latest Bradt Guidebook, so let the planning commence.

Sounds fab. Currently looking across the bay of Kotor in Montenegro. The view is tremendous. The local roads less so!0

After a few rainy hours here I recommend it.
Avoid driving if you can.
Avoid the local wine too.0 -
The old road from Kotor going up the mountainside has ...if I remember correctly 13 hairpin bends! However there is a new road which avoids most of that (again if my memory is working!!) Wonderful view from the top.
Went on a trip from a cruise- it was really stunning scenery and I understand the town was fascinating too. Sadly I didn't have the energy to do that . If ships are in port walk round town early before the hoardes descend!!Being polite and pleasant doesn't cost anything!

Try and find out Port schedules, and avoid any day that shopping trollley ships are alongside.....they swamp small towns.0 -
I visited Montenegro and Croatia when they were still called Yugoslavia, about 30 years ago.
Amazing places, although the rampant inflation was the start of what came a couple of years later. I still remember getting about 35,000 dinar to the pound and two weeks later the exchange rate was about 45,000.
Restaurants changed prices daily, the largest note was 50,000 dinar so changing money often meant getting a bagful of notes.
Lovely country and great people. Definately somewhere to return to.0 -
Sarajevo is a fascinating place full of history but a bustling modern city too. Mostar is worth visiting for the bridge alone (I think it's been re-rebuilt).
When I was a child my Mum had a jigsaw puzzle of a river, woods and bridge scene. Years later I arrived in Mostar and - there was that scene ! I had absolutely no idea.
Have you been to Dubrovnik ? I know it can be tourist-y but it's worth exploring the harbour, old town and food market, trying local restaurants etc rather than spending two weeks confined to an all-inclusive hotel !0 -

I remember that. I changed my drachmas (about £20 worth) and got 880,000 dinars. A machine dispensed them and banded them at the train station and your pockets bulged with them. There were shopworkers marching ahead of us in the supermarket aisles with pricing guns repricing items in real time as you shopped.
It was a fascinating place back then. For a communist country it didn't feel at all oppressive (I'd travelled through Czechoslovakia the same year and was very aware of the difference) and it had a very positive but laid-back vibe. I'd love to go back now. There is no honour to be had in not knowing a thing that can be known - Danny Baker0 -
