edit advanced power plan settings
processor power management
system cooling policy -> passive
or possibly simpler, change to a Balanced power plan - suspect it may have been turned up for gaming?......Gettin' There, Wherever There is......
I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple0 -

No, settings were on balanced, and the laptop has been reset anyway so any previous settings would have been wiped.
I also can confirm it's 4GB of ram. It wasn't overclocked either. I tried updating the bios but the utility from the HP website kept giving me an error that the CAB file was missing so I gave up.
I think I solved the issue. I vacuumed out the grill where the fan blows out and used some new thermal paste and it seems to stay on ok temperatures while playing videos on YouTube. I have to try with a game to be sure though.
Thanks to everyone for the replies.0 -
I had an older HP which ran hot. I think this was an issue which has been resolved in the newer laptops. I used a cooling pad which brought the temp down until I got a new laptop.You know what uranium is, right? It's this thing called nuclear weapons. And other things. Like lots of things are done with uranium. Including some bad things.
