Car Hire - full to full, with deposit for tank of fuel

Hi all,

I'm looking to hire a car in the summer in Norway, I've found many of the car hire sites have a caveat in their fuel terms to say that when we pick up the car we will need to leave a deposit:

" this will include the full cost of the rental plus a tank of fuel (approximately £ 140.00). The cost of fuel will vary according to the make and model of the vehicle. "

I've never seen the tank of fuel included before in the deposit. What I can't see is that if we take the car back full (with the receipt they say we must provide), if we will get the whole deposit returned to the credit card, or if it will be minus any admin costs.

We are looking at Hertz to rent from, but I've also noticed this on all the other major companies, I've never noticed it before. After reading so many car hire disaster threads on this forum, I'm very wary about making the right choice. Or am I confusing myself, and thinking about people who have taken out full to empty contracts?

Thanks in advance

Are you renting direct with Hertz or via a Broker?

I've hired many times and every time there has been a full to full policy. They offer you a full to empty when you pick up the car. This often works out expensive as they seem to charge an arm and a leg for fuel.

I've never had a problem finding fuel near the return point. I've also never had to provide fuel receipts as they just check the tank is full.

    Direct with Hertz;
All Hertz vehicles are rented with a full tank and must be returned with a full tank or a local refuelling charge will apply in addition to the cost of the fuel.

    Fuel Purchase Option (FPO).
For convenience, you may purchase a tank of fuel from Hertz at the time of rental at a price that is competitive with local fuel stations; this method eliminates the need for you to refill the tank before returning.
Please be aware that we are unable to give a refund for unused fuel.

So the default is Full/Full. No deposit. But you have the option of buying a tank of fuel.

Brokers may have their own T&C/Contract.

Thanks for the replies, I'm looking at booking via rentalcars.com with Hertz. Happy with full to full, as this is what we've always done before. I may have just not noticed that the deposit they take will include the cost of a full tank in the past, and that it's all returned when the car is taken back full.

I just spoke with Rentalcar who assured me there is no admin fee taken out of the deposit on return, but just wanted to be 100% - as I read stories every few days about deposits on the forums!

Don't forget your car hire excess insurance.

Just to update, I booked the car direct with Hertz rather than through Rentalcar.com - I read many bad reviews of them! Hertz don't seem to mention this for the deposit, so much better to go direct in this case.

Will also book our own excess insurance before we leave
