Is your guarantee enforceable?
* you were given a copy of the tenancy agreement with or before you signed the guarantee?
* the guarantee was 'Executed as a Deed'?
* your signatiture on the Deed of guarantee was witnessed independantly?
If it's invalid, you can defend any court claim against you on those.

Write to the LL/agent, cc solicitor, requesting a complete rent statement for the period of the tenancy, highlighting the period when arrears arose, and what subsequent payments were made.
3.
Ask (or write to) your friend to also produce a rent statemet, showing what exact dates he made payments, of what amounts, and what rent was due on each date. Again, highlighting when arrears arose.
Compare 2) with 3) to determine if there really are rent arrears.
4.
Ask (write to) your friend what response (eg defense if any) he intends to enter if sued for the rent arrears.
5.
Your friend's solicitor is unlikely to discuss anything with you. He represents your friend, not you.
He might agree to represent you both jointly if you ask (and pay!).0
