I noticed a feature on powershops website thus weekend that I didn't know was there
If you choose the transactions tab and bill information it's hidden in there
At the bottom your address appears with an arrow next to it pointing down. Click on this and a detailed monthly breakdown of your costs appears including at the bottom average unit price in pence per unit
Am I mistaken in saying this cost is calculated incorrectly. It is calculated by taking your monthly bill total and dividing it by the amount of units (kWh) you've used. Mine comes out at 13.53 for the last bill month which is more expensive than powershops quoted 13.5 pence per unit for their standard power
Surely the tariff cost of 16.6p per day should be taken into account. My last month (billing period) consisted of 34 days so unit cost works out as 11.15pence (a discount of 17.5%) if I take 34 days standing charge off the total cost.
The previous month works out as 11.21 pence for a 27 day month
My first month works out as 11.49 pence per unit for a 32 day month
This all seems quite reasonable to me.
So am I correct in stating powershop are doing themselves a disservice by overstating the unit cost of their power on their own website0 -

Thank you
There is absolutely no compulsion to renew a contract. No professional consultancy service is required. Just use a couple of free comparison websites, such as the MoneySavingExpert Cheap Energy Club which also provides cashback wherever possible.

Shiver me timbers has just been made available in the shop today until Saturday 23rd September
It has a massive 27.8 percent discount
Needless to say I'll be purchasing that one0 -
Good morning,
Thanks as always for your continued comments and observations!
Rather than being incorrect, the 'Unit rate' shown in the online account under 'Bill Information' is just an Inclusive unit price for the period shown. This takes into account all costs for supplying energy to the property during each billing cycle (including daily standing charge) and divides this by the amount of kWh used; this is why it displays a higher cost per kWh than expected.
Hope this is helpful!“Official Company Representative

Thanks for clearing that up powershop rep. im glad I understood things correctly and my calculations are spot on.
Perhaps another column could be added to this cost breakdown factoring in the price once standing charge has been taken into account
I say this because all other utility companies quote pence per unit excluding the cost of the standing charge. By representing the unit cost inclusive of standing charge it gives an inflated figure which may be off putting for some customers. It can appear unit cost is higher than standard unit cost has been quoted at and may cause customers to query the cost or indeed leave for another company
I'm quite happy with powershop at the moment. 3 months in and my electricity is costing me a few pounds less than this time last year
Thanks again for the response0 -
We appreciate the feedback Tafrock and can see the benefit of adding the effective price per kWh. It's definitely something we're considering adding to the customer account; watch this space!“Official Company Representative

I shall watch this space closely. Thank you
PS quite impressed with today's special powerpack. 27.8 percent is a sizeable discount. Look forward to more of the same in future months. Keep up the good work0 -
Latest statement received today
For a 30 day month my unit cost works out at 10.81 pence per unit. That's pretty much what powershop promised I could achieve in my opening quote if I proactively bought the required powerpacks
It appears once you get the hang of which powerpacks to buy the stated savings are easily achievable
The key is only buying the power packs that have the biggest discounts and only buying enough electricity to cover your actual usage otherwise you end up with a hefty credit building up. I use between 30 and 35 pounds worth of electricity a month. If I buy all the monthly future packs that are available at the moment because they are discounted by over 23 per cent I actually buy 50 pounds worth of electricity thus adding to my balance monthly by 15 to 20 pounds.
Very impressed with powershop I must say0 -
@ Tafrock I think you have convinced me
My expiring fix with Avro came out at £750 (6700kwh). Their current fix would be £850 on that usage, not actually as bad as it looks, of the "conventional" tariffs only Iresa are promising a significant saving on that, with a few more showing savings of £15-£20.
Powershop give me figures of £963 (Standard), £930 (Promise) and £783 (Powerpacks), which even beats Iresa by £34. So I'm thinking I should be able to beat Avro's £850 fairly easily, after which it's all "profit". Unless Powershop's Standard Rate increases of course......hmmmm, now the doubts are creeping back0 -
Thank you. Of course if the svr did increase then that would change everything. However you are free to leave at any time without paying an exit fee. I've always opted for a fixed rate but took the plunge and went variable and im impressed. Of course being variable it could also decrease which is never a bad thing0
