Still Trying to Connect USB Adapter

Options
Yes, It's me again (Hi TOG & Edinburghlass - Didn't know if you could help on this one).

I have an old PC with Windows 98SE and bought a Belkin Router and a Belkin Network Adapter (usb wireless) as I didn't feel able to install a PCI ethernet card.

With help from Belkin (and TOG on this forum) I have tried every conceivable way to get this adapter to work.

Having uninstalled everything and starting again, I downloaded the drivers from the internet. Then tried plugging everything back in and..........it almost worked. I got as far this time as a message coming up when rebooting but saying not all drivers installed - Code 10. It even asked me to instert my Win98SE disc which I did but it could not find the driver. It was attempting to find something in a temporary folder Q312339 but there is so much in that folder I do not know what it needs.

So, I resorted to trying Microsoft website for help and found a page which suggest this:-

"I have networked my main machine and my laptop together using a wireless network. Is it possible to connect to the Internet through this network so that I can surf from my laptop?"

"Traditionally you would use a third-party program such as WinGate (https://www.wingate.com) to configure your network to do this, but if you are using Windows 98SE, then Microsoft has included all you need as standard. Internet Connection Sharing is the name Microsoft has given to this tool, and installing it is reasonably straightforward. Select Start, Settings, Control Panel and double-click the Add/Remove Programs icon. Select the Windows Setup tab then double-click the Communications entry; you’ll find the Internet Connection Sharing option in here. Simply tick the checkbox, then hit OK to install ICS and launch the Setup Wizard. "

So, I followed the instructions and found the Communications entry is ticked (or checked) but is greyed out. When I rightclick there is no Internet Connection Sharing option.

Is this because I have disconnected the router and adapter and gone back to plain old cable modem?

Help, please. I have had my lovely laptop for 2 weeks now and am still unable to connect it to my pc.

(TOG, I was hoping a friend would call in to fit a PCI Ethernet card for me but he has let me down and I am still too nervous to start taking my old PC apart despite everyone's assurances that it's a piece of cake)

Do you have a pci ethernet card? I can talk u through the installation if you like.

I'm afraid usb in W98SE is a bit of a lottery. I think you are flogging a dead horse.

No, I didn't buy one as the chap I spoke to said he had one (and not to) and that he would check to see it was working OK then come round and install it.

Also, the supplier of the Adapter (which cost over £20) will not take it back unless it is faulty.

When you were installing the drivers for the USB adaptor, you said that it was looking for a component that you couldn't find. Was it something like ****.vxd or ****.dll

I've got plenty of USB devices running off W98SE. I've found that quite often during installation you get a message that it can't find a component and you need to insert the W98SE disc. If you open up the search on your computer (start>find>files and folders....search C) type in what you are looking for and it will quite often find the component already in your computer. All you need to do is put the file path to where it has found it on your computer. Something like C/Windows/System.

I don't think W98SE is hit and miss at all with USB. I've always managed to get everything installed when I needed it, and have been running USB devices for years on this machine with no problems whatsoever. I've just found that during installation you sometimes have to help it along with a search.

BTW I also visited Gateway to try checking for drivers but my PC is too old (pre 2002) so I am reverted to the US website which states you should not download drivers outside the US from that site!

    I can't remember.

All I can remember is that when prompted to instert my Windows 98SE disc it could not find what it was looking for. It is now unistalled so I can't check it.

This is one of the foibles of W98SE that I've found when installing devices. It will look for a component that is already in the computer and not find it. This is why I recommend you try a seach for the component when installing, chances are that you will find it where the installation can't. This will help the drivers install properly instead of being an incomplete installation.

If I try installing the V2 drivers, would I need to have the router connected or can I try installing it still connected to the modem?

Reason I am asking is because (obviously) I lose all internet connection and it is a pain unplugging and re-connecting everything up.
