but if what you say is 100% true and you strongly believe you have not hammered the internet whilst there then don't pay it.

He does need to prove it still.

The contract between the lodge owner and their ISP has got nothing to do with the OP, so whether or not the OP did "hammer" the internet it really not relevant at this stage.

The only important thing at this stage is what the contract / wifi T&Cs between the OP and the lodge say.

    Thanks,

He has itemised usage and date but not times. We have proof that we were not there on some of those days for considerable periods so this could help.

Also, he sent usage for the day before we arrived and this is also high, similar to the usage he claimed we had. Could there be piggybacking going on?
It could be anything - does he change the password for each new guest? If not there's nothing to stop a previous guest using the wifi if they're in range. Or a neighbour getting hold of the password eg if they overheard a previous guest discussing it (like kid shouts to mum in a different room/outside "Mum - what's the wifi password"...)

Anyway as above unless he informed you there's a wifi limit there's nothing he can do, even if he proves it was you who used it.

I wouldn't pay anything as it could be seen as admitting liability.

Not very sensible owner. He should have an unlimited wifi, even if it is a lower bandwidth, to avoid these sort of problems.
