BT infinity connection problems

We've had the service for about 7 months with no real problems until the past 7-10 days where we have noticed the connection dropping off regularly and for long periods of time. Engineer came today to run some tests and advised that we call customer services and request a Home Hub 5 as the Smart Hub we have is causing the issues and, consequently, a lack of speed.
My concern is that, whilst we should have a more reliable connection, that it will be slower and coverage will not extend as far as the Smart Hub. I can't understand why it has been fine for so long and now we are experiencing these issues.
Anyone had similar?
