I won't be voting Conservative, as I don't believe in dismantling the welfare state

Under Brown the welfare state became somewhat bloated in term of complexity and administration. The public sector is as far from efficient as you can get in many areas. Taxpayers money needs to spent well. Worth following the National Audit Office reports that get published. Plenty of criticism of many initiatives. Politicians generally may have the ideas but lacking as to how to implement effectively at ground level.

Most large organisations are inefficient in both public, private and charitable sectors. I agree taxpayers money needs to be spent well.

Its easy to find inefficiencies in such organisations, but how would you measure the efficiency of something like the NHS? What metrics would you use to assess this concept of efficiency?

And then how do you measure "spent well"?

At our local hospital 20% of appointments are non attended, i.e. people simply don't turn up. What would be a good way of "punishing" people for the waste of valuable resources?

Make them wait till the end of the clinic?

Someone is booked into to have an MRI scan. Fails to turn up. That's 8 staff plus the machine time lost. Never to be recouped. That's the sort of issue I'm referring to. Or a busy consultant holding a clinic on a Saturday morning. For which they'll get paid a sizable amount of money plus have a staff nurse on overtime in attendance. Money wasted down the drain.

The NHS is a broad complex organisation. Probably require a couple of hundred or so KPI's. The use of available resources is the key.

Requires a broad debate as to what the NHS should provide as well. Keeping people alive for longer. Will only result in ever increasing bills. as older people require more and more medical help. That's the unavoidable fact.

Britain should take 50,000 more Syrian refugees from camps in the region, the Liberal Democrats will say in their manifesto, as well as re-opening the scheme to resettle lone child refugees in Europe.

Tim Farron, the Lib Dem leader, said Labour should match his pledge in their own manifesto and said the offer was a message about his party’s values.

    That'll solve the homelessness problem....

Yes, Anthony Wells is simply repeating what has been well known for a number of years.

There is confirmation from a ComRes poll for The Mirror. Some of those Labour policies are so 'popular'; nationalising this and that, for example. However 56% of people still think that Corbyn "would be a disaster as Prime Minister".

    http://www.mirror.co.uk/news/politics/poll-shows-people-love-labours-10404216

People will tend to vote for whatever party that has a leader who won't be a disaster.:)

    Like me Anthony Wells has realised that the ComRes poll on the leaked manifesto was confirmation of his argument. Obviously he has more time to look into the poll results and notes the following;

After all those questions on Labour’s policies ComRes went onto ask which party people thought had more realistic and well-thought through policies. After having approved of nearly all of Labour’s policies, respondents went onto say that the Tories had the more realistic and thought through, by 51% to Labour’s 31%. Asked if they would be more or less likely to vote Labour having heard about all these new policies 34% said more likely, 47% said less likely. Asked who was running the better election campaign, 42% said the Conservatives compared to 20% for Labour.

    Are these any good?

I'm puzzled why people think the NHS isn't trying to be more efficient.
