Anoneemoose what you say about getting bored of eating cake if I could do so without guilt is so true. As a child I had a friends whose dad worked in a chocolate factory. They always had dishes of chocolate in the house and my friend always had mini bars in her packed lunch. I clearly remember her giving the chocolate away because she wasn't bothered by it! Food clearly has emotional attachment one way or another and I'm thinking counselling might help identify why I over eat.

This! With bells on. BMI is also a useless indicator of health, it was never designed to be used as it is. In fact, there is also increasing evidence to show that being in the overweight category leads to a longer life than the 'normal' category.

I do actually have things saved with links to 'proper' studies, but I can't figure out how to get them on here. In the meantime, here is a link that is quite interesting.

the study says might and you says it does.

I also said 'increasing evidence', which is what it is. It is not definitive yet, but (increasing) evidence suggests it is the case that more things than previously show that it does.

Bit pedantic to pick up on the wording, but hey ho! Regardless of whether it is true or not, still doesn't get away from the fact that the BMI calculation is flawed and not an indicator of health at all. And that in 1998, a lot of Americans suddenly were classified as overweight, who had previously been 'normal' after the category scales were changed.

reading what anoneemoose says about syns is explained in this article I found.
but as slimmer world says you can have syns in moderation, so there wont be a bad stigma to your thought process,
having bad thoughts about food when eating can make you fat. (explains better in the article).
weight watchers is the same they say u can eat anything you like as long as you count it in your points(calories). so these diets take the ''cant have that food'' out of the diet plan.
today i went for a 5 min sprint sets on the tread mill.
I had 2 sausages 2 eggs for breakfast, and at 3pm had chips and curry from the chippy, as it my treat day, and I didnt think that was bad or having a guilt thing happening.
tonight ill just have water and cups of coffee.
Quite happy as i enjoy heavy laden calorie foods.
Tomorrow I will miss breakfast and have lunch and that will be it..
And then when all my fats gone of my body.I will start a three meal calorie plan.
2lb a week fat loss is my target.
anyway here the article, quite good.
Say, for example, we were examining a plate of pasta, chicken, and salad. A woman wanting to lose weight would see calories and fat. She’d respond favorably to the salad or chicken but would view the pasta with fear. An athlete trying to gain muscle mass would look at the same meal and see protein. She’d focus on the chicken and look past the other foods. A pure vegetarian would see the distasteful sight of a dead animal and wouldn’t touch anything on the plate. A chicken farmer, on the other hand, would be proud to see a good piece of meat. Someone trying to heal a disease through diet would see either potential medicine or potential poison, depending upon whether or not the plate of food is permissible on her chosen diet. A scientist studying nutrient content in food would see a collection of chemicals. All of these are reflections of our perceptions, our unique nutritional and food psychology.

What’s amazing is that each of these eaters will metabolize this same meal quite differently in response to her unique psychology and thoughts. In other words, what you think and feel about a food is as important a determinant of its nutritional value and its effect on body weight as the actual nutrients themselves.

Does this sound unbelievable? Here’s how the science works

A good article, explaining a lot of what I am trying to say. However, I cannot find where it says anything about SW and syns and weight watchers and points? I think you have misconstrued it in relation to that. At SW, you have a limited number of syns and, what to use them on, or going over them, leads in most cases to the inevitable guilt and mental challenge I have previously described. Same with WW, that's just straight forward calorie counting, disguised as a points system. Again, it's restrictive. These plans tell you you can eat anything you want BUT ONLY if you count it. It is the counting that is the problem. Any plan that limits you in any way is restrictive and potentially bad for a healthy relationship with food.

I say potentially, because I will always acknowledge there are a small number of people it doesn't happen to.

it doesnt, that my thought ..
your point was syns is a bad thing and its not as long in moderation.
so a slice of cake would be eaten with no guilt thefore you would metabolise efficiently.
3 or 4 slices in one sitting would bring on a guilt feeling and therefore result in metabolising inefficiently, also adding to overload in calories.
when people diet it is a natural thing that we are built for,
even fastings ok thats why have fat cells.
Anyway you wouldnt tell everyone to stop drinking because we have alcoholics.
Btw the bmi chart is floored it dosent take in muscle and fat content.
BMI (Body Mass Index) has been used for over 100 years in population studies, by doctors, personal trainers, and other health care professionals, when deciding whether their patients are overweight. However, BMI has one important flaw - it does not measure your overall fat or lean tissue (muscle) content.

I meant the concept of syns was a bad thing. And yes, if you don't go over them, I can see your point. However, you fill find that it is very easy to go over them, having to choose between say, a slice of cake, and some gravy on your dinner..that is just an example, of course, but an example of something I have done previously. And it is that restriction and having to choose that causes the problem.

My dad eats a roast dinner, with gravy and yorkshires and crackling AND a cake. He feels no guilt, he is slim.

Absolutely, you're analogy regarding alcoholics is true, as in we don't tell people to stop drinking. However, alcohol is not necessary for survival, food is, and as such a healthy relationship with it is the best idea.

true I think its natural for us to eat food when we aren't even hungry, boredom, depression etc and when we reach are ideal weight we pig out..
Im a yo yo dieter, but now when I put weight on I think, im on a break and enjoy it..its just not letting it get out of hand and I must get back on the diet again..this really helps
drinking a pint of water when your hungry, or B4 a meal, I tend not to eat as much..
anyway good luck on your healthy living and hope things work out for you.

time for a song to cheer me up.
0:16 quite funny on the clip

Ha! I love that! And for although you're a yoyo dieter, you seem to have a healthy attitude to the 'in between' period.

    I too, wish you luck.
