Check out it's MOT history online, then take it for an MOT, it's worth £45 to find out what's what.

What name has he put as the buyer? If it says something like Sam Smith Motors or Sam Smith Garage it's a trade receipt not a retail one.

  • Hi.

    Sorry to hijack this post.

I am in a similar position as the original poster. Looked at Car, teat drove car (no issues), paid for Car, received receipt with "no warranty " and "non runner ". Drove 30 miles car develops issues. Spoke to vendor a few times with various attempts at him trying to resolve issues. No Good!!! Can I ask for a refund?

Was the car sold to you as a non-runner or did the dealer add this to the receipt a sign an afterthought? If the later, why did you accept this ?

If the former, what faults made it undrivable, what did you do to fix those faults and what problems are you now having?

You may be able to reject the car but only within the first thirty days.
The comments I post are my personal opinion. While I try to check everything is correct before posting, I can and do make mistakes, so always try to check official information sources before relying on my posts.

Yes, within 30 days. Beyond 30 days, up to six months, there's an expectation that a fault was apparent at the time of purchase unless it can be shown otherwise. However, they're both tempered by whether the car meets reasonable expectations for the age, price and apparent condition. So a £20k 6mo car has much higher expectations than a 15yo £300 shed with a month's ticket left.

What car, how much, mileage, ad wording?

If he is not willing to cover his legal obligations, then your recourse is through the courts. If you want to reject the car, then you need to put it outside of your use immediately - return it to the supplier - then take him to court for your money back. Whatever you do, do not get anybody else to work on the car.

Does no one these days ever bother to ask the seller 'does the vehicle have any faults/what is the condition of the vehicle?', or bother to read the receipt/check the MOT, service history and V5C before merrily driving off into the sunset?
    It seems not.

I have a local garage that advertises cheap cars on ebay; I would think think these cars will be sold without warranty too, but I believe they would need to be road worthy.
