"spares or repairs only" on receipt

Ive just bought my son a 2nd hand car from a car dealer.

The car drove fine on the test drive, it does need 2 new front tyres.

When i got home i noticed on the receipt it said "sold as seen" which is fair enough. But it also had "spares or repairs only" on the recipt ?

does this mean the car is un road worthy ?

it came with 4 months MOT

Sounds like a trader trying to avoid their responsibilities. If it were spares or repairs they shouldn't have let you drive it away.

If you have bought from a trader alarm bells should be ringing as to why they haven't put 12 months mot on it.
  • It means you need to get it to your trusted local garage for a full service and ask them to check it over while they are doing it.

But then again I would be doing that with any second hand car I'd bought anyway.

if the dealer allowed you to test drive the car and then drive it off the forecourt onto the public highway to take it home then the sold as seen spares or repair statement will not hold water and you still have some rights under the consumer rights act

but this said any faults declared or described at point of sale wont be covered

if the dealer made clear the car was spares or repair refused a test drive and made you take the car from the dealers premises on a trailer then the above spares or repair sold as seen statement may hold water

Well yes, it needs 2 new tyres.

That said it was sold to you as "spares or repair", so some repairs are to be expected I suppose.

    Was it an expensive purchase?

Legally "spares or repair" wont impact your rights as he clearly sold it to a retail customer and allowed them to drive it off the forecourt, so its a retail sale.

I wouldnt get too hung up on it at the minute, if the car is otherwise as described and you're happy with it.

Taking it to a mechanic is a great way for him to come up with a list of "worn" items on the car for him to charge you to fix....

Whats the year, make, model, engine type, miles and price of the car?

"Spares or repair" does not necessarily mean a vehicle is unroadworthy at point of sale. There could be several things wrong which will need attention in the near future but do not stop the vehicle from being driven or make it illegal to drive, e.g. tyres with minimal but legal tread, battery and alternator near the end of their lives, cambelt due for replacement etc.

Looks like you might have a few surprises in four month's time when you get the car MOTed!

I suspect its an oldish car, so theres never any guarantees about what an MOT will take.

Likewise, just because it might need MOT work in the future doesnt make it a problem car now....

The sort of dealer who writes that on an invoice is the sort who is going to ignore any consumer rights you may have.
