Council Tax,How do I pay?
Comments
-
Given the OP apparently couldn't see the "Council Tax - Moving House" link on the council's website, I suspect they'd have trouble finding their phone number too.
Guys, I don't think either comment is fair. We don't know the op's situation by the sounds of it they are young and are trying to get all of their ducks in a row before moving in. It can be a bit overwhelming to sort out all the bills at once when you're not used to dealing with any.
My mum used to say if you've got nothing nice to say don't say anything!!
Op good luck in your new home.0 -

This attitude panders to the new breed of people who won't learn how to do anything for themselves and is dangerous... 4-5-6 generations down the line how do you think humanity will cope if we teach people to believe it's normal to be able to do nothing?
When I was young I would have known the answer to 'how do I pay my council tax' would be 'call the council'!0 -
You may need to notify the following:
Post Office for Mail Redirection - Redirection Service application forms are available at all Post Offices or you can telephone 0845 606 0202. You need old utility bills + passport/drivers license etc.
When looking for contact numbers for all of your old and new suppliers be aware that any websites showing premium rate 084, 087 or 09 numbers are either showing out of date information or are scam websites showing fake numbers. There are hundreds of these.
Reputable companies use numbers starting 01, 02, 03 or 080.
Anything starting 084, 087 or 09 is probably a scam. See http://www.fairtelecoms.org.uk/ICSS0 -

I don't agree at all. If you are unsure of things and don't ask how ever are you to find out? I have a very well educated friend in his 40's who had never paid a bill in his life as when he move from home he moved in with his (now ex) wife into her house so she just added him to the council tax and into the electrol roll etc.
When they split he would have struggled to organise a mortgage, arrange utilities, council tax, etc as he had never done it if he didn't ask for advice. Some things which may be obvious to you are not obvious to everyone and as I said if you don't ask you'll never know. It may be (in part) common sense but these are skills learned through doing them they are not taught in school how to budget pay bills etc. Once the op has done it once he/ she will know for next time0 -
We can all learn from each other. Or we can learn the hard way. Life's too short to faff about. There is no honour to be had in not knowing a thing that can be known - Danny Baker0

To be fair to the OP they did ask whether it might be done as part of taking on the tenancy, and if the answer was yes then there might be no need for them to contact the council.
Of course, we don't know what the answer is as we haven't seen the paperwork that was processed, it's not that likely that it would include notification to the council but it's certainly not beyond the bounds of possibility, and it's something that the OP should check for themselves by reading what they have signed.0 -
In my experience - and it goes for both landlords and tenants - it's never good to rely solely on another party to pass on information to the council.
Even if it ends up duplicating the effort as they other party has contacted the council then it's always best to contact them yourself - far too many cases end up with court costs, enforcement agents etc simply because one party thinks the other has done something.
CraigI no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.0
