Food for a girls night in...

Options
Hi everyone, as I have the flat to myself for the next week or so, I've decided to have a friends round for a sort of girly night in. As I don't have a TV, watching a movie is out so I thought I'd get my arsenal of craft stuff out and we could spend a few hours just playing around with stuff and making small things (perhaps a few things that could be given as Christmas gifts).

I just wanted to know if anyone had any ideas for food though - I can't do a sit down meal at the table is going to be coated with paper, paint and sparkly stuff, but I'd still like to do something fairly substantial, hopefully that can be mostly prepared in advance.

Does anyone have any ideas for slightly more substantal finger food that won't keep me in the kitchen forever? I'm going to make some fairy cakes but other than that I'm at a loss for ideas. Two people that are coming are veggie. cel x

I will save my tesco £1 savings stamps this year! .......so far = £50 (full card#1)
Card #2 £6. I will not be skint at Chistmas this year!

  • 2 pasta dishes making sure one is vegetarian. Served in paper bowls with garlic bread and red wine. Made in advance, no washing up. A nice icecream to follow if you decide to have a sweet. Forget all the fittery stuff, dig in and enjoy.
  • Why don't you have a chocolate theme (us girlies like choccie) get everyone to make or buy something with chocolate in it and indulge!!

    simple choc truffle cake

This is the easiest recipe I know and so easily adaptable by adding fruit or liquers etc.

You need 1 pt double cream to 500gr cheap choc ( I use sainsburys value)
(or wait til easter eggs are really cheap)

Break up the choc and put it to melt in a bowl over sausepan of boiling water, make sure the water is not touching the bowl let it melt without touching it.

Whip the cream so it is very thick and standing in peaks (dont overdo it though)

when choc is melted turn off heat but leave bowl over the water. Add a large spoonful of the cream to the choc and mix well. Then add the choc to the cream and mix well (do not whip it as you will lose all the hard work you put into the cream)

Put it into glasses and chill or line a cake or bread tin with foil and set it in that using the foil to help you turn it out again.

This takes about 12 hrs to chill nicely, you can layer with different colours of choc or add strawberries, raspberries, canned cherries, tia maria, baileys anything really just keep to the proportions of cream and choc.

    Enjoy

Lots of chocolate, lots of wine and a small bowl of peanuts to make sure you have the nutritional balance right with some protein:D

    Hi celyn

I have made Hot Broccoli dip with pitta chips a few times when I have had my friends round. You make everything during the day (well chop it up and give it a stir) and then put it in the oven when everyone is just about to arrive. My friends absolutely love it! I make loads so there will be enough for jacket potatoes the next day, but as yet, my Hot Broccoli dip has never made it onto the potatoes - it's gone in a night. Am happy to post if you want the recipe.

Plus, the usual suspects of wine and chocolate of course :D

Could you make a big pot of dip to go in the middle of the table and then give everyone a wooden kebab skewer to help tem selves to chunks of veg, bread etc to dip in? Sort of like a fondue but without the dangerous flames.

Hummus is easy and vegetarian http://www.freshliving.com/recipes76.htm
add some oil if you want to make it runnier
    Here's a spicier idea: http://southernfood.about.com/od/appetizersandsnacks/r/bl00116a.htm

You could do a similar thing for pud with cold choc sauce and bits of fruit, cake, marshmallows etc
    eg

    SPIRITED COLD CHOCOLATE SAUCE
    Makes 1-1/3 cups
    8 ounces bittersweet chocolate, chopped
1/4 cup unsalted butter, cut in 8 pieces
    1/4 cup water
    1/2 cup creme de cacao
Melt chocolate with butter and water in a medium bowl over nearly simmering water. Stir until smooth. Remove from pan of water; cool 10 minutes. Gradually stir in liqueur. Serve immediately or refrigerate. Sauce can be kept, covered, up to 1 week in refrigerator. Reheat refrigerated sauce in a double boiler or bowl set in a pan of hot water over low heat. Cool sauce to room temperature. If sauce is removed from refrigerator and brought to room temperature without reheating, it will be too thick.
