Employer looking overtime?
Comments
-
Meanwhile back in the real world, if I was already doing a full time job, doing an extra day a week plus evenings on top instead of the 9-5 I am contracted for, for no benefit whatsoever to myself then I'd be looking for toil or similar rather than being paid and effectively gaining nothing.
As, I suspect, would most people if they were actually being honest with themselves.
This is not someone being workshy trying to avoid getting a job. It's a full time worker who sees no benefit from the extra hours being requested other than being knackered and seeing less of their family.
In his/her place, I'd feel the same.
Exactly, the voice of reason.0 -

I agree with him as well. You are talking here about someone doing a full time job. Why on earth should he have to work extra hours just to suit his employer? What's your rationale for that? Should everyone on minimum wage be looking to take on an additional job in your opinion?0

The op isn't objecting to the overtime per se - the only reason he's objecting to it as it will affect his Housing BenefIt.0 -

Take HB out of it, say I didn't get it. I would do an hour or 2 just to pass myself, I know some folk love overtime, I am not one of them people, I work to live not the other way about. 40 hours per week is enough for me.0 -

Evidently it isnt, as you cant pay your living costs from your wages.0 -
Which is why I am entitled to HB. Now say HB didn't exist I would have to reduce costs to live within my mean, working around the clock wouldn't even come onto my radar.
Thats (unfortunatly) a choice you have.
A symptom of the problem we face now.
The support network that dissuades a work ethic.0 -

So essentially what you're saying is its wrong to claim in work benefits? We'd be better working around the clock to pay our own way? Would it not be better forcing employers to pay a wage that actually is a living wage so people wouldn't have to claim in work benefits?0 -

Pay your way in life? Well yes I would expect that.
I dont have the answers for making a support network that still encourages work.
Is it my fault you are in a job that has low pay?0
