If it is your first one, you should leave up to 6 weeks in case they want to interview you face to face.

  • It should be fairly quick, one to two weeks. Send it off by special delivery so they get it next day and hopefully you will have the new one back within the week!

The brochure is wrong wrong wrong. (Assuming it's not Northern Cyprus you are going to, when it's right).

For EU countries your UK passport just needs to be valid. It is against EU law to make any preconditions as to a validity period.

However you've plenty of time to renew. They say 3 weeks but it's almost always quicker.
  • I have just renewed one for my son. I had to get a new photo and have it countersigned, and although they say up to 6 weeks, it only took 5 days.

If you do renew before you holiday, make sure that your application clearly gives your date of travel. That way they are likely to make an effort to ensure it gets back to you in time.

I replaced mine last month to avoid having to get a new id passport when they come out. I paid the £7 to have it checked at the post office on a Monday and it came back the following Saturday. The good thing was that the £7 includes posting it off, so you save yourself the £4.50 special delivery post charge.

Ghastly photo though, I have a fringe and wear specs..so the photo where I had to pull back my fringe and take my specs off makes me look like one of the living dead!
