  • Hi
Me again. I have spent 2 days without the radio on and listening to the car for the noise. It makes no noise when driving on smooth main roads and involve no turning.

When I go round a roundabout at slower speeds (whether exiting left or right) there is a clunking noise. As I enter the street where I live (turning right) there is a small ramp (road changes from tarmac to block paving) so I get a serious sounding 2 or 3 clunks.

It seems to be, the more effort I have to put in at slower speeds to turn the car the clunking appears.

AdrianC - looks like it might be the driveshaft because it is only happening at slower speeds. Beginning to sound expensive now!
Richard53 & motorguy - CV joint another option to explore.

It is possible it could be the wishbone?

Can you tell I no nowt about cars.

Much appreciate you all taking the time to reply. x

This is a fairly typical FWD driveshaft. It's the bit between the gearbox and the wheel, one each side.
The CV joint is the bit at each end which allows the shaft to move around and change direction, so you don't have to always have a dead straight line between the gearbox and wheel. There's one at each end (inside the rubber boot), but it's the outer (wheel end, the RH of that photo) which tends to fail, because that's the one that has a much harder life.

Quick google suggests a shaft's about £170, a CV about £120, depending on which diesel engine's in your Megane. Labour won't be huge - about an hour or so. Obviously, a main dealer will be a chunk more expensive for both parts and hourly rate.
  • Oh for the days of prop shafts and Hardy Spicer joints....! ( till they decided to peen them in )
Started my job at the bottom and liked it
