Renault Megane Diesel Estate 2012 clunking noise when turning

Hi

My car has developed a clunking noise at the driver’s side, front end when turning.:(

Initially my hubby thought it was the track rod so this was replaced. No change, so the drop link was replaced next along with the strut top bearing. No change. Front end still clunking.

Has anyone any ideas what it could be?

Many thanks for your time

Top bearing mount? Anti roll bar bushing? The strut itself?

    Is the clunking speed-related?

If so, likely to be the outer CV joint.

A CV joint would normally make a "cracking" sound, not a clunking sound.

In my experience (old-style Mini) it's a heavy clicking noise.

    True. Thats a better description.

    Not a clunking sound though

If it only does it when the wheel is turned to the left or right and the car is moving my money would be the outer CV joint on the driveshaft.
  • Hi
Thanks for taking the time to respond.

Top bearing mount replaced. Hubby disconnected anti roll bar at both ends and took it for a test drive. Still clunking.

He looked at strut and apparently all look OK. What could be wrong with the strut?

Adrian C. The clunking happens at low speeds. Hubby feels it isn’t the CV joint because the clunking would be happening all the time.

I'm going to take it for a test drive tomorrow and pay more attention at angle of turning and speeding I am driving when the clunking happens.

The driveshafts I've had go south have done it at low speed - because that's when you've got enough steering angle on to cause it to become audible.

I'm not going near the attempts to differentiate between a click and a clunk via a text medium...

When CV joints go, they often only are noisy when turning, especially a tight corner or when manoeuvring. They are often silent when driving in a straight line, so you wouldn't hear the noise all the time if they were faulty.

IF its driveshaft / CV joing it should make a cracking noise if you turn in to it on full lock when driving, so watch for that. Also listen for it when you are driving without turning - try to listen for it when going over ramps or imperfections in the road surface.
