Hi not sure I'm posting this in the right place. I'm hoping someone can help. I need to get a gas meter installed, in order to install radiators. I have tried googling, to find who is the cheapest, but can't seem to find a comparison site for this. Any help would be much appreciated.

I assume you have originally had gas supplied to your property? If you haven't had gas before and need a gas pipe laying from the nearest gas mains, there are several firms; the costs can be eye watering.
If you are installing gas Central Heating, the plumber should arrange the fitting of a meter. Bear in mind that new Central heating can sometimes require a larger bore gas pipe from the meter to the boiler.0 -

Whoever installs your gas supply will fit you a meter as part of the job.
It's not the fitting of the meter that costs the money, but the installation of the supply pipe. That's a bit like asking how long is a piece of string.
If your neighbours on the street have gas, then chances are that there is a gas supply right on your doorstep and it just needs a pipe running a few metres to your house. The cost in this instance should be just under £1000.
If it's more complicated, get some quotes, but beware if you use an IGT rather than National Grid, you may later be restricted as to the supplier you may have, particularly the cheap ones.0 -

Just been through this with my mother. National grid are the people to contact. If you approach someone like British gas they contract out to national grid and top up the bill by £100. Mum was quoted 540 by bg with a lead time of up to 4 months. Ng best both the price and lead time. Luckily for mum, the pipe going into her living room was live when they sent someone round to do a check in the first instance. Once the supply was in place her energy provider fitted the meter so the central heating could go ahead. Good luck.0

If you already had a live gas supply, and just wanted a meter, they are about £50 on ebay0 -
Thank you - I will contact National Grid - £400 odd sounds more manageable, but I guess each case differs.0

Ok, I now understand. I just need the meter, I'm not personally paying for the supply to be connected. I stupidly thought that I was getting the gas supply doing that. Thank you so much for your replies. Very much appreciated. Off to check out some comparison sites.0

I really am more confused now - if anyone can help i would really appreciate it. I have electric with Npower, so decided to contact them for a meter, they don't install new meters any more, but they gave me the name of 3 meter installers, Meter Plus, Lowri Beck, Amey Metering, all have said they cannot install a meter without a referral from Npower. Amey phoned them and they said I need to contact someone like British Gas, get the meter installed then I can transfer over to them. I don't want to get locked into a contract with British Gas, does anyone know the best way forward from this. Can I take out a contract then switch, I don't mind if I have to pay a £30 leaving fee or something. Thank you.0

As long as you specify standard variable tariff, you can start a switch as soon as you have registered for an account with the outgoing supplier-it will take 17-28 days. No minimum term or exit fee on any SVT..No free lunch, and no free laptop0
