Viginmedia Broadband & Hub 3 issues

I thought I would share my recent exepricence of Viginmedia. In November 2016 I decided to change to Fibre broadband and chose a Virginmedia phone and broadband package with £14.99 installation fee.
On sign up I was offered a Dec 9 start date. Then I got an email saying it would be delayed to 13 Jan 2017. On 12 Jan I got a text asking me to contact them; it transpired that they needed to dig up the pavement to lay cabling and needed local authority permission to do this. That meant the start date was delayed to 1 April 2017, some 5 months after I signed up for a 12 month contract. As my current provider Talktalk had already been notified by Virgin that I would be leaving I had to call Talktalk to ensure I didn't lose my phone connection.
The actual installation went OK but Virgin had not re-informed Talktalk of the new date so had not sent a port request for our phone number. We therefore lost our phone number and have a temporary one until that can be done. Talktalk are also saying I will have to pay an additional month's bill because they were not told I was leaving on 1 April, which they may repay out of courtesy - we will see.
At installation I asked about using the Viginmedia Hub 3.0 as it had no manual. I was told it was dead easy to do online. I now find from Viginmedia Forums that in fact the Hub 3 software is defective so it has less functionality than my old modem. For example despite having instructions for doing it online, the Hub will not allow MAC address filtering so I can't use the parental controls to limit my child's internet connction. Virgin apparently have no plans to change this so my only option is to buy another modem, which puts up the cost of installation by about £70. Vigin seem quite content to install defective hubs
All in all apart from increased broadband speed Virgin have been useless. I would appreciate any advice on the best way (and when ) to start looking for a new ISP before the contract ends.

and needed local authority permission to do this.
They do like that excuse, whether relevant or not.
They will probably put their prices up in October which will give you an opportunity to leave within 30days if you wish.
Can't you use your old modem, as a hub maybe, and your kids access that one?
or purchase a VM Hub2 off ebay if they have the facilities you require?0
