    Those aren't major problems at all. Sounds like you were not ready for home ownership.
    I moved into a house with 6 roof leaks, boiler constantly overheating, kitchen drawers and cupboards falling apart, damp. There were many other issues.
    !!!! happens. I fixed it all and lived happily. I was annoyed though but don't let it ruin your experience.

    :rotfl: you can be pretty sure that anyone who ever owned a house will have stories exactly like that. Just part and parcel of standing on your own feet.

    We are in the same boat - but still thrilled we are in our first ever home.

    1. On the first day the drains backed up and flooded the utility
    2. We realized they had hidden some issues with the downstairs loo (leaking shower)
    3. One of the patio doors has a locking fault
    4. the boiler has a start up and misfiring issue. (had a quote and its expensive ugh)
    5. a hundred small problems like hidden damage or maintenance
    6 they had also painted around their furniture - surprisingly not noticeable on viewings - - meaning an pretty much immediate paint job was required

    but we look at it this way - in our old rental there wouldn't be a hope in hell the LL would repair - we can. If the LL did repair the already extortionate rent would have been put up.

    So its all good and we still love living here!
    Please note I have a cognitive disability - as such my wording can be a bit off, muddled, misspelt or in some cases i can miss out some words totally...

    It is one of the few benefits to renting. You are however stuck with your LL's choice of maintenance quality in terms of materials and craftsmanship.

    If the OP is so depressed about the minor inconvenience of a stuck garage door, I wonder how they will cope with any genuine tragedies that life may throw at them?

    It's less great when the landlord decides on tennant replacement rather than worry about building/contents repair/replacement though isn't it :rotfl:

    Yes, this is what home owning is all about. Very few people arrive to a place which doesn't actually need several Ks of work.


    On the other hand, it is also yours, you can make it into the place you want it to be, and yes, it'll take money and time. OP - try to find what's *right* about the place and enjoy it and just plan as G_M suggests how to sort the problems out.

    Currently feeling very low, purchased what I thought would be a dream house. Have encountered problem after problem with the house after stepping foot through the door (Leaking skylight, broken garage door, broken boiler etc.) Solicitor is basically not interested - do I have any rights after completion or is it a case of selling a kidney to afford everything?

    Wishing I had never stopped renting right about now - if anyone has any stories like this that have a happy ending please let me know

    This Is par for the course, it comes with the territory. And yes it does come with a happy ending.

    Never mind, it's your own place and you have total freedom to do it how you like, when you like. No more pandering to landlords and lining their pockets.

    Just make a list, roll up your sleeves, take a deep breath and dive in.

    You'll soon have it ship shape in no time.

  • Thank you for all the useful replies, reading all your experiences has put mine into perspective :)

    I'm the first in my family to buy and I'm only 24 so my inexperience is the main problem at the moment - I'll be an expert by the time I sell!
