Not using the return ticket

My daughter is off to work in Norway for a while, but a single flight ticket is more expensive than a return one. Has anyone bought and not used the return, and what has happened if so? KLM at the moment are saying there may be extra charges if she doesn't turn up!

If you ask an airline they will of course threaten extra charges. In fact large numbers of people have done as you suggest without penalty.0

Yes I have heard that, but just wanted to know if anybody on here has actually done it.0

Fly with a different airline from a different airport?
Book the return leg for a long time in the future.
Book a flexible ticket.0 -
I don't want to change the airports, the return flight will be in June, so not yet available for booking and it costs more to book a flexible ticket.0

They won't know that she didn't use the return leg until the date/time of that flight. Therefore they cannot possibly contact her or fine her till afterwards. Cue the response "I was late to the airport and missed the flight.":heartpuls Mrs Marleyboy :heartpuls

yes I've done it, never had any flight company contact me afterwards and try to charge me for missing the return portion of my flight.0

c'ould she ring the airport an hour or so before she is due to fly back and tell them she is not able to make the flight, accident or something, which will enable them to sell the seat.make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.0 -

They're unlikely to sell a seat 1 hour before departure. No point doing anything, the OP's daughter should just no-show the return flight.0 -
This is laughable, unless they refer to the cost of using it on a different flight (if it has any flexibility). Simply abandon the return portion, there's never a penalty for 'no-show' if it's a fixed booking that cannot be used later.KLM at the moment are saying there may be extra charges if she doesn't turn up!:Evolution, not revolution0
