When to tax new car?

More to the point, what is it? Something interesting?
Nothing astounding, just a mid-90s Land Rover 90. You would think there would be millions (especially as I live in a rural area) but not so. There are thousands at £5k and under, but they are all either horrible sheds full of mud, or falling apart, or modified for off-road in a big way. There are plenty of restored and immaculate examples from £12-18k, but those are out of reach. It took me a while to track down the sweet spot - a clean, unmodified and honest example to use as a daily driver, which wasn't too pricey.
After Defender production ended last year, prices have gone through the roof.If someone is nice to you but rude to the waiter, they are not a nice person.0 -
Ah... Yes, Defender prices have gone a bit daft. I dunno, this modern boingy rubbish...

I remember thinking that coil springs will never catch on ...
Have you seen the price of a good Series 2 or 3 lately?
Jeeeez. If someone is nice to you but rude to the waiter, they are not a nice person.0 -
Get the seller to email you the completed v5c to include the 'new keeper details' bit (V5C/2). Use that to tax the car on line before you leave home to pick the car up. The seller should simply complete part 6 of the V5C and hand you the actual V5C/2 part when you meet. You hang onto that until your new V5C arrives. The seller (or you) then posts the rest of the completed V5C off to the DVLA. Job Done.
or just do it online0 -

And look where it's all ended...Have you seen the price of a good Series 2 or 3 lately?
Jeeeez.
Cheaper than a gym membership!
Bizarrely, Defenders seem to be stronger, condition-for-condition. I guess there's a lot of soft wusses who just aren't man enough for a series... SWMBO's driven ours. Once. And sworn blind never again.0 -
We had a Ninety, and later a S2a, and later again a P38. My wife always said:
For the Rangie, a lace bra.
For the Ninety, a sports bra.
For the Series 2, a neck brace. If someone is nice to you but rude to the waiter, they are not a nice person.0 -

Er, isn't that what I said?

I'm assuming someone as sensible as you has the insurance ready to go at pick up also...
A safe assumption on my part, just posting to dot the i's so to speak...0 -
Truck is now taxed and insured, ready to pick up on Sunday. I asked the seller to message me the 12-digit number off the new keeper supplement, and I was able to tax it online no bother. I have sorted out insurance as well, so we're good to go.
I guess my original concern (in part) was that if the seller now informs DVLA that the vehicle is sold, he will get a refund of the £245 I have just paid in tax. I have heard of this happening. The truck was already taxed for the year, and now it is taxed twice. We shall see!
This must be a common situation, just one I haven't been in before. All the advice & info much appreciated. If someone is nice to you but rude to the waiter, they are not a nice person.0
