converting larger amounts of £GBP to other currency

Firstly, I'm new to the forum and so sorry if this is already well known / has been covered in other threads / this is not the best place for this thread. I have searched the forums (and Google) but didn't find anything that answered my question, so...
I'm emigrating from the UK to the US and selling our house in the process. So we'll have a much larger sum of £'s to convert to $'s than when we usually go for holidays! With this essentially being our life savings, it's more important than ever to make sure that we get the best rate possible (and I know that this is one of the worst times in recent history to be turning £GBP to any other currency... can't help the timing unfortunately). Does anyone know the best route to take with this and/or does anyone have experience of the process?
Many thanks in advance...

The best way appears to be to open a foreign exchange trading account with a broker or bank and simply change your address when it is appropriate to do so.
None of the currency transfer companies appear to offer a particularly good exchange rate.0 -
We use https://www.currencyfair.com/ to convert Sterling to Euros when we need to.
Decent exchange rates and only a $/£/€ 3 transaction fee0
