Can any local Hullensians offer advice on good areas vs bad to live in central Hull?

It can't be that recent, I was at Uni there in the late 70s and never heard the city referred to as anything other than Hull, and the football team has always been Hull City, from long before your dad was born. Perhaps calling it Kingston was a thing in parts of the city but not others (maybe in East Hull, home of Hull Kingston Rovers).

Anyway, it appears it was known as Wyke on Hull first, and Kingston replaced Wyle in the 13th century, so perhaps we should be calling it Wyke!

It is feasible that the name Kingston was what the locals in my area (about 25 miles away from the place) were still calling the town as an insult to the inhabitants.

Hey guys how does this one look in terms of locality

    https://www.gumtree.com/p/1-bedroom-rent/1-bedroom-flat-in-prospect-street-hull-hu1-1-bed-/1225924067

It is super central but is that TOO central? ie right on top of all the drunken louts of a weekend?

It is hard to see what area is what since I don't know the areas and google maps seems very sporadic in naming them.

There's no doubt that it's smack in the centre of town, so will be very handy for everything. The downside, as you point out, is that there will almost certainly be some outside noise, although how disturbing that will be is difficult to say without visiting the property to see sound insulation, door security, etc. Another big problem is likely to be parking if you have a car, it says there is no parking with the property, and I'm not sure there will be much available on street around there.

I'm not sure what problem you are have viewing the area on Street View, it seems easy enough to me (although some of the pictures outside Princes Quay seem to have been taken in the dark, which is a bit odd).

I don't have a problem with street view and looked around this property with it :); though hadn't before I posted above. I see now it is on a major shopping lane but if there were no bars/clubs then it could be dead(ish)? at night. It all depends on whether people go through there in order to get to other nightspots and what kind of folks they would be.

I was talking about generally knowing what comprises what area which people have told me to avoid/are good etc. It is clear when the avenues are named or other street names but often on G maps there is no area name.

Oh, looking at the map on google nightclubs in Hull it seems that all the clubs are close and Fuel club is almost on the doorstep! Although I would be patronising that place from what I read I don't know I want it in my back garden. It looks like that street could be the funnel for everyone walking through to get to the bars and clubs further south.

Having said that securing a 6 month contract I could play it by ear then and have plenty of time to find something more suitable once I had my foot in the door living in the place and know the areas better. I see there is only a 20 quid referencing fee which is a big plus.

I don't drive any more so no problem there. Living centrally there is no need. Walking all the way.

The link you posted to on Prospect St is in the new town (not the quaint old town) and it will be busy there during the day. There is a library opposite. It's fairly quiet on week-nights however you're in the middle of two gay clubs (one of which is very close to you on Baker St) which do get very busy on a weekend and are the latest opening clubs in Hull (open til 6am) so unfortunately it's where a large amount of very drunk people tend to gather at the end of the night. I know people who will go out drinking in other areas miles away and then make an impulse decision to get a taxi all the way over there at 3am because they don't want to go home, so it does get very busy there.

I'm a Yorkshireman, late 60's and was at Uni in Hull 50 years ago. I never heard locals call it anything else but Ull (rhymes with pull or full).

I am incredulous that someone who works from home and relies on the internet would even consider choosing Hull as the place to live and work. KCOM is unique - surely anywhere else in the UK would be better?

Well I fancy it. It seems 50/50 between those who are satisfied with the internet there and those who aren't. from replies I received.

That means that it is possible to get good internet if you try and I would make it my sole priority. If it can be acheived with some effort then no prob. I very much doubt it is an insurmountable problem.

I have found at least 4 alternative companies only yesterday. One must give something half decent.

The area just to the north of East Park (in east Hull) is quite pleasant.

Yes but the OP wants something within walking distance of the town centre...
