Can any local Hullensians offer advice on good areas vs bad to live in central Hull?

I agree with Kilby's suggestions. It is worth noting that Hessle is approx 4 miles from the city centre so it is closer than you might think.0
-
Hessle is ok, but not much going on there, Newland Avenue is a dump avoid any of the ajoining streets.
Larards and Riverside are the main estate agents for the centre of Kingston Upon Hull.0 -
In my opinion if you're looking for hipster areas as you put it, you want to be on princes/newland avenue. There's lots of nightlife around here. In general though hull city centre itself isn't the best in that regard.
I am not actively looking for hipstersI just thought they make better neighbours than antisocial chavs.
Generally young professionals might be more accurate. I guess quiet family neighbourhoods would be further out so would not suit.
I am liking the sound of old town most so far. Looks just the kind of location I like and the price is doable at around 425 for one that I liked.
I also made a post on the hull reddit seems to tally with what people are saying here.
I will have to check the slightly further out areas on google maps to see if I would consider them walkable. Manchester is so spread out and I walk everywhere anyway. I must walk 4+ miles in a evening getting to places. No problems with that. If people are saying it is more compact in Hull then maybe what they consider a long walk wouldnt be for me.
Although I wouldn't like having to walk through dodgy areas on my way to and from where I live. That is anohther benefit of being very central in that it is cctv everywhere and always a few people knocking about the streets.0 -

Hull and Manchester are very different. When we talk about "the centre" most people in Hull are referring to the shopping and nightlife areas around the two shopping centres (Princes Quay & St. Stephens) - so from the train station to the West, up to the river Hull on the East side. Like you say, it's quite compact. Princes Avenue is less than 2 miles away, so easily within walking distance but you can't avoid walking through some quite dodgy areas. I've walked this route quite a few times, but I certainly wouldn't recommend it as a regular occurence. I would recommend that you visit and see if the avenues area is sufficient for your needs or if you feel you'd need to venture into Hull centre a lot. If the latter, I would go with the old town or Victoria Dock.0 -
You will soon change your mind after your first experience with KCOM.
What's wrong with them?
I work from home wholly on the Internet so need to know my service will be reliable. If there are issues it would be pretty serious since I would not have any option to switch.
I guess you are grumbling about customer services related issues? surely they must run a reliable internet service?
Oh crap I just looked at the packages and they do not look good. You only get inlimited with the £64 per month package!!!?
I use it every day though not necessarily alot of bandwidth, I never checked since most other companies give you unlimited even on the smaller packages.
Broadband is absolutely essential for me, how ironic if I could not move there because of that. I paid 28 per month with sky for 20mbit down 1mbit up. Though they raised the price to 32 along with the bt line rental increase.
The packages with kcom seem very limited. Either you are very light user and extremely stingy bandwidth allowance or heavy user paying max price for unlimited.
I am a heavy user but the I do not need superfast speeds. Can't I have unlimited/or higher bandwidth with lower package? I will send a support question.
Oh I just found these guys

Who seem to be more the kind of packages that would suit me. Any can vouch? I only need broadband anyway and no phone line.
Hmm looks like it is only wifi? Is that cos they have to use some big towers to bypass Kcomm's stanglehold. I prefer wired to reduce packet loss/speed loss.

I'm not sure why you would think that. KCOM are pretty much in a monopoly situation, so there's no real incentive for them to offer a good service. I don't live in Hull but my best friend does and it certainly doesn't seem like what he is getting is great in comparison to what you can get elsewhere by shopping around.0 -
Yes I just did some reading and things look bad! I need proper internet! This situation looks very draconian from what I'm reading; some customers have likened it to !!!!! (lol why would m-a-f-i-a be a forbidden word, getting a bit overzelous aren't we Marty boy) racketeering. This really could screw things up.0
-
KC can be frustrating but it shouldn't be a deal breaker IMO. I'm a fairly heavy broadband user and the package I'm on is £45/month. They're still rolling out fibre and the service is improving. Yes they've got a monopoly and yes the customer service is rubbish, but you'll be able to make it work for you even if you have to switch to a satellite or 4G provider.0

Likelihood is that in the centre you will be fine, I don't live in "Hull" but was involved in setting a new office up there 5 or 6 years ago. I can not remember the exact reasons but setting up the phone lines and internet through KCOM was a complete PITA. I remember wasting at least 3 days on site with nothing to do.
Going back to the Kingston/Hull issue - I could get the reference to the English civil war but I am reliably informed by my dad, in his late 60's, that he remembers everyone calling the town Kingston so it would seem to be a relativly knew thing to call the town "Hull", at least to folks in Yorkshire.0 -
Lol 3 days oh noes. Yes if you are working then that is alot of time wasted but nothing for a resident waiting for connection in the long run.
If it is just a bit more hasstle to set up then that is nothing worth mentioning.
I would only be concerned about the service once up.0
