What would you do.

What would you do, if you came into an unexpected windfall??

Would you automatically chuck it at your debt?? or

Would you give it to a hard working homeless daughter desperately trying to find a deposit on her own home??

  • It depends on how much the windfall was.

I'd probably go 50/50. Use half to pay off my debts and give half to daughter towards a deposit.

Don't know if that's any help.

  • personally.. I'd chuck it at the debt. Sounds harsh but if you pay your daughter's way then she's not going to learn how to handle stuff herself and will always be coming back to you when she needs money.
    Why is she homeless anyway?

  • I'd chuck it at the debt. According to your signature, you've got a lot to pay, and I assume the interest saved (not to mention regular payments) would be of great benefit to you.

In normal circumstances, kids will make it on their own eventually. We all start off with nothing, working hard and feeling poor when we're young but it gets better.

(I am a hardworking daughter, by the way, so I fully appreciate how hard it is these days! Thankfully it's finally started to get better, but I didn't need my parents to get there.)

Does your daughter have particularly special circumstances? Is she currently renting / living with you?

  • It's not her fault that she's homeless. Her ll sold the flat in which she rented a room, and she's not eligible even to be on the council list, don't ask:mad:

She has worked hard, and has no debt, even has savings, but on a minimum wage, she runs a car, pays her rent, never been in arrears or od. She even has managed to save, just not quite enough, with the way house prices are going atm.

  • I would (and did with reclaimed bank charges and a hug amount of backpay) chuck it at my debt.

If your daughter has some savings then she could rent for a little while?

She can't live here, that's why she moved out 2years ago.

  • "but on a minimum wage, she runs a car, pays her rent"

If she's on minimum wage, would she be able to get or even pay a mortgage?

Chuck the money at your debt IMO
