I use BT, fairly good, but you do get transferred to India sometimes which is annoying if you get someone with a heavy accent. Besides that their tech back up has been brilliant for me, they even talk you through fixing the internet if a virus has broken it
Thing with researching these things online is that it is very rare that people have good service and take the time to put it out there, but as soon as they hae bad service they rant on a forum somewhere. I tend to try and start threads asking if people have had good or bad experiences with certain firms, you are still going to get more bad than good, but it can be a slightly more balanced idea.0

If you want to pay £14.99/m for unlimited upto 8Mbps then I would suggest going to Eclipse, a subsidiary of Kingston (upon Hull) Communications.
 http://www.eclipse.net.uk/index.cfm?id=home_res
I've been with them on Eclipse Evolution 1 for 18m with BT's ADSLmax at 3Mbps synch and regularly obtaining 2.3Mbps download and been 95%+ satisfied and I surf a lot but dont do online gaming/DVD downloads etc. Not checked their T&C's since I signed up but from memory it was a 12m contract then 30days notice, if you left before then they could charge you c£40 setup and repossess the otherwise free ADSL kit.
Just be sure to elect NOT to 'LLU' unbundle your ADSL - ie stay with Eclipse's BT provided ADSL circuitry (rather than some LLU circuit such as on Tiscali)so that you can migrate away quickly/simply by MAC if/when you choose - as the LLU MAC'ing process hasn't I believe yet been 100% finalised.
I am just MAC'ing off to AOL to get a free laptop for £5/m extra but 2yr contract (by which time I'm assuming LLU MAC'ing will be 100% sorted).0
