Halifax mortgage with a default

Hi all
this is my first post, my self and my partner want to apply for a mortgage we have a £28000 deposit,and are looking for a property about £140000,my partner works full time i am self employed,new buisness only a year old and salary is only part time £7000,we do get tax credits etc,my partners credit is fine,i have defaults they are now completely settled . 1 2014,and the other 2 4th apri 2017l,i have no other debts at all.no over draft,or credit cards,dfefaults were from 2013,we have been told to use a broker,im saying to wait maybe till next year to apply for a mortgage,but people are saying hse prices are just going up n up,im just thinking let the dafaults get older,any advice would be very appreciated,ps we are both 50 and looking at a 15 yr mortgae thnks0 -
