Hi, have been onto chat twice to try and get a better deal on my Fibre broadband, up to 38 mbps from Talktalk. Both wouldnt budge on their same offer, however the first chat person told me that if i didnt get speeds of 25mbps i would be allowed to cancel my contract , ( that wouldnt be much help) , I only get an average of 18 - 20mbps , so did that mean that i should AT LEAST get 25mbps, i put this to the second salesperson to try and get some improvement on a deal . He told me that i had been given wrong information , and if i had gone ahead with that deal, i couldnt have cancelled. SO seems that they dont know what they are doing. Will try again in a couple of days , this time by phone

ISPs should allow you to get out of your contract if they can not meet the minimum speed.
You need to put your number into the BT ADSL checker
https://www.dslchecker.bt.com/
and see what the 'Downsteam Handback Threshold' is for your line.
They will probably try to use the 'Impacted' figure, so that's the best one to look at.
If you are getting less than this, then you have a good case to negotiate with them. They probably can not make the line any faster, but may offer a reduction to keep you.
The problem will be that any other ISP will have the same Openreach infrastructure to contend with, so will not be able to offer any faster speeds.0 -
I thought he was on fibre, what has DSL got to do with price of eggs? Thanks, don't you just hate people with sigs !0

Because the BT DSL checker shows the VDSL (Fibre) speeds as well.0

I would still look around for a better deal than TT. Customer service seems far from ideal! My own provider gives 38Mb fibre with landline for just £28.35, and thanks to a cash back card that I use for my shopping (5% cash back most places I shop), I rarely end up paying much above a fiver. Ditch the big boys, shop around, and save, save, save :-)0
