I had a brabantia for many years, and they replaced elements twice over that period. I only changed when I got a new kitchen and opted for an in built multi bin unit. I passed the brabantia to my neighbour who finally disposed of it last year, it was 20 years old!

Talking of volumes, I live alone. My bucket is rectangular and I keep all the recycling and rubbish in it.

For general rubbish, I keep package wrapping, such as loaf wrappers and cheese packs and crumpet packs etc. I start with filling, say, a crumpet bag and after nearly a week that might be close to full, so then I'll pop that into a loaf bag ....and after 2 weeks I'll put the loaf bag out with the bin, even though I'm lugging a huge bin up the garden and outside just for the half a loaf wrapping it contains. Once a month I'll have a "big round Robin" and actively seek out anything else that could go into the bin and it'll usually fill half a small swing top bin bag that week.

For recycling, I start by keeping a small "meal for one" box - each new box that's opened is taken apart and folded to fit into there - about once a month I've a "microwave dinner for one" box of recyclable cardboard. For tins I wash them, dry them and pop them in the bucket - when I've a few I tread on them and drop them into the recycling bin. The recycling bin goes out for collection about twice a year.

For glassware, I wash/keep that and put out all the glass about once a year.

Sorry noticed that bin may be too large

Ikea do a smaller version - 16L for £10 but that may be too small

I have a Brabantia and absolutely love it. The clip inside the lid stopped working so I phoned the helpline and they sent a free new clip. I usually use Tesco value black bin liners in it. Bought it on a 20% discount day from Debenhams a few years ago. Recommend them highly.

Yeah, I've had a Brabantia about 6 years and it's like new. No rust, pedal works great etc. I got an off white one (painted) metal one rather than the stainless steel finish, cos they were on offer about 40% off, and I didn't want to spend a fortune!
The bags are quite pricey, and atm we find the 30l bin is a bit too big for what we (2 adults) need, have to empty it when half full or notice the smell when you open it.

Bins smell in the summer. Even with a lid on it the pong will waft up when you open the lid so suggest a smaller bin and empty it often.

Cheapskates like me dont own a kitchen bin. I just stock up on a roll of handled bin bags from Lidl, fill it throughout the day and take it out to the wheelie bin last thing at night.

I ended up buying this: http://www.lakeland.co.uk/24638/Rotho-Kitchen-Waste-Pedal-Bin---Metallic-Effect-20L
It was cheaper on Amazon so I rang them up, and they price matched it for me :)

I kept thinking that a rectangular bin would be more practical than a round one, since most packaging is rectangular. And this is plastic so it can't rust. It's just the right size for my kitchen. Only flaw is that it's very light and can move around a bit when you open it. From what I've read, the brabantia ones don't have that issue.
  • I bought my bin for £4 20+ years ago.
Its made of plastic, is still like new, has a flat top and the lid stays open if I want it to.

It really isn't worth spending £££££££'s to throw rubbish into, no matter how fancy looking they are.
    Brands = Rip-offs

I didnt realise that was possible.

I've got a Brabantia one and for a while now the clip for the lid to stay down sometimes works/sometimes doesnt.

I'd better google for the helpline number and ring and ask too then.
