I've had a basic plastic bin for years but the lid has broke so I've been looking online for a new one. The old one was too big for the kitchen anyway, since I moved house. I'm looking for a round shiny metal type one this time.

Brabantia keeps coming up, and they have the sizes I'd prefer, either 20L or 30L, but the prices are astronomical! They're about £45-50. Is it worth that amount of money? It seems crazy for something that just holds rubbish but the reviews keep saying how good they are and I can't find anything suitable locally.

We;ve been looking round for one recently and surprisingly (to us) Homebase seemed to have some good prices - under £15 for a 30ltr stainless stell bin, and cheaper plastic ones.

Can't comment on the quality as we haven't decided on one yet.

With stainless steel kitchen stuff, you get what you pay for.

The Brabantia ones have good solid pedals, inner tubs that are easy to remove and trim that's easy to clean.

I'm not a fan of stainless steel though so went for this:

Strong pedal, back wheels for easy movement, small footprint and, my favourite bit, the lid can be clicked back to stay open.

got a 50 litre brabantia about 12 years ago and it was pricey but good as my kitchen forms one wall of my living room so the bin needed to look ok - the liners are quite pricey though about 30p each

The Homebase one doesn't look too bad, and the reviews are reasonable. I doubt it would last as long as a brabantia one but it wouldn't need to at that price.

Now I'm starting to wonder if 30L might be a bit big. It's only me, no children, and it's a very small kitchen. I already have a largish bin for the recycling but this one will be for the non- recyclable stuff.

I saw the prices ....and I use a bucket now instead :)
  • When I lived alone, I used a carrier bag in an old plastic waste paper bin and I emptied it every couple of days. Just tied the handles of the bag and dropped it into the dustbin on my way to work. As you say, there's very little that needs to go in a kitchen bin Three of us here now and I kind of use the same method, only the bin sits in the drawer under the kitchen sink and is purpose made from IKEA
