Selling My Car...

My car is currently being advertised on Autotrader.

I have a potential buyer coming to look at the car on Wednesday, following a telephone conversation we have verbally agreed on the price (which is lower than, my original asking price) and I confirmed it is ok for his to come on Wednesday to look at the vehicle and if happy purchase at the price we discussed. He will be traveling 200miles and has also informed me that he has prebooked a train ticket for this journey. (No deposit has been paid or agreement signed for the car)

Since this conversation with the above I have received additional phone calls from other potential buyers who are wanting to view the vehicle before Wednesday and seem willing to offer a higher price than that agreed with the above potential buyer.

Where do I stand? Have I committed myself to selling the car to the guy that is coming on Wednesday (have I given a verbal agreement) or would it be ok to sell to another interest purchaser that is willing to look at and potentially purchase the vehicle before Wednesday at a higher price?

If I am able to sell to someone else on a fist come basis, what about his train ticket?

I am panicking about this and don't want to do anything wrong that is going to cause me any issues. Any advice will be gratefully appreciated and thank you in advance for any help/advice.

  • I would be quite peeved if I put in to buy it first. The other way round I would hold it for the 1st person BUT if you can get a higher offer let the 1st buyer know and say they can still be first but they will need to offer the same price as another buyer.

    That's fair to me.

Well you should have just told the first buyer that its his risk because it might be sold by Wednesday unless he leaves a non-refundable deposit to secure it as you have other buyers interested. Live and learn.
I guess for now take the numbers of other interested buyers and say you'll get back to them if its not sold to potential buyer A.

Unfortunately there's no guarantees in this game. Buyer A might not turn up and the others might not buy it either or if they do try and beat you down even more on price.

Buyer A due to view Wednesday
    Schedule buyer B for Thursday.

Tell buyer B viewings are in turn and you'll be taking the first acceptable offer recieved.
Buyer B know's others are interested and the car may be sold before they get to view it.

Tell buyer A on Wednesday that others are interested and you'll be taking the first acceptable offer recieved.

Buyer A knows if they want it they ought to buy it there and then.
If they don't, tell buyer B on Thursday others have viewed it and are considering it.

Buyer B knows that others are desiring it and can jump in quick with an offer to secure it.

Wouldn't bother trying to play the buyers to get max offer, you may end up with no offers. Take the first acceptable offer and get shot of the thing.

As you agreed with Buyer A as to this plan and hes went ahead and booked tickets, as per what Sooler has said, you really need to be scheduling any other prospective buyers to AFTER Buyer A has viewed the car.

I once held a car for a buyer, putting off later offers, only to find that the blighter didn't turn up and didn't even have the courtesy to let me know. It's a jungle out there and you have to look to your own interests.
I used to think that good grammar is important, but now I know that good wine is importanter.

I've had it happen too. "I'm desperate" "I'll definitely be there" etc. etc.
    Yeah sure! :(

I'd only keep the vehicle for somebody if the deal was done and I'd already been paid, or had a hefty deposit.

Which he'll no doubt find reasons to reduce that when he sees the car.

Is the difference between the offers more than the cost of Buyer A's train fare? If so and the second buyer comes good on it, give buyer A his train fare back.

Just be open and honest with all potential buyers and you're covered. It's not difficult.

You sell to the 1st to see with the payment, he who snoozes loses.
I never discuss lowest price acceptable over the phone, if the buyer is interested they will hurry to view and usually at the weekend.
