DG windows - cash price?

Have you asked why he wants cash, and why there would be no guarantee if you pay cash?
If he indicates that he would not put this through his books, then think about this before you agree.
Do you use the roads, and want them to be kept in repair? Do any of your family members ever get sick and need the NHS? Do you have children who use the education system? Do you ever use the libraries? Do you want us to have a police and justice system so you can be kept safe? The list goes on
Also be aware that if one person does not pay their taxes the rest of us will have to pay more, or to have fewer public services. Also you will have difficulty when you come to sell the property with no FENSA certificate, as others have said above.0 -

But it's a fair assumption; you don't skip VAT and avoid paperwork if you're a legitimate businessman.0 -

ahhh so its a trial by moral assumptions!
VAT wasn't mentioned in any of the ops posts.
paperwork wasn't mentioned in any of the ops posts.
I get your point, but this is like saying I'm a tax fraud because I paid to see Jimmy Carr and quite like some of Gary Barlow's songs.0 -
read the first post again and this alone should ring alarm bells but then you go on to defend the actions of somebody who is defrauding the state anybody doing supply and fit will be over the vat threshold of 82 k a year last time i checked so if this installer is any good then he is not paying vat as wellmartinsurrey wrote: »ahhh so its a trial by moral assumptions!

But part of the problem is that you won't have a problem when selling, you just get indemnity insurance... I think it should be made tougher when selling, and force people to get the right documentation (for boilers, extensions, windows etc) when selling or face larger financial penalties - would help to get rid of a lot of cowboys in all these industries.0 -
Tbh, op, you should have got the price first, you now have no idea if the "cash price" is actually a lower price at all! Then at least you'd know if it was worth sacrificing the warranty etc to save a bit.
It's not something that i would really be tempted into unless it was a significant saving and i was on site observe the installation of each windowThis is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -

People go along with the concept of indemnity insurance without asking why? Solicitors give poor advice, the insurance industry wants to make profits by selling almost worthless policies and solicitors want to make commission selling these almost worthless policies. It is not a case of making matters "tougher" it is case of wising up consumers to demand fundamentals.
For example, if there are no Buildings Regulations get a retrospective inspection or regularisation. If there is no boiler certificate get it checked and tested by a GasSafe installer. If there is nothing on electrics get it tested by a competent electrician and get a test certificate. If there is no fensa then get the windows inspected for Buildings Regulations.
People toss indemnity insurance into this Forum as a magic bullet when in reality it is largely a scam.0 -

Please; you're being deliberately obtuse.0 -
Nothing wrong with paying them cash if you want a saving and as for everybody's concern on here about VAT & TAX I am sure none of them have ever not declared a single thing at some stage.
As long as the guy is willing to stand by his work and you are both happy then there is no real issue.
I used to fit windows many years ago and did a few cash jobs and as for not doing a good job as one on the books well that is nonsense, Before anyone jumps on me for not paying my dues I have done over many years of working and this was going back quite a while where I still paid my dues.0 -
Stop the ned flanders comments about doing the taxpayer and the chancellor a wrong! grow up.
The problem here is, in my eye, resale. Buyers will want to see a receipt for windows.
In terms of discount, doing it without VAT is only going to technically save 10%. On a £5k job that's £500. To me, I'd rather pay that for a ten year warranty and the documents to go with it.0
